78 Pace Car...How can you tell it's the "Real McCoy"?
A friend of mine is thinking of buying a 78 Pace Car and was wondering how you can tell if it's in fact a true Pace Car and not a clone. Serial Number? Etc ?

The VIN number is the best way.
The 8th digit of all 78 Pace Car VIN's is a "9". On all other 78's, it will be a "4".
You should also check the Trim Tag, in the front of the driver's side door jam. The paint code on a Pace Car will be "19/47", and the trim will either be "152" (leather seats) or "15C" (cloth). A Pace Car in the only 78, that this combination of codes, will be found on.
The Trim Tag will also have date code on it, made up of a letter and 2 numbers. It will appear something like "G04", near the top of the tag. On a Pace Car, the letter should either be a "G" "H" or "I"; indicating a body built in March (G), April (H) or May (I).

Pace Cars have their own VINs. The car line series code is a 9. Since only 6502 of them were made, the consecutive unit number cannot exceed 6502.
Time Build codes for Pace Cars are March, April, and May 1978. All of them were finished by about the second week of May.
The Pace Car was an options package, almost all of which is documented. Paint, graphics, wheels, interior, spoilers, etc.
Your friend should ask for original factory documentation with the car. Most Pace Car owners usually have documentation.

That is correct original Pace Cars usually have documentation to back it up handed from owner to owner. That being said they are not the pot at the end of the rainbow, unfortunately only worth a couple thousand more than a stock car of the same vintage and also mileage dependent
