I like to put the garden hose in the radiator running slightly so it always has a supply of cool water, a fan pointed at the radiator helps too, this way you don't have to interrupt breaking in the cam if it gets too warm
Ok cool and thanks guys! I am hooking a few things up tonight so I can get going as early as possible tomorrow. During the process I seem to have moved the small wire to the starter. Anyone help me locate where it comes from or how to track it down?
So today I hit a snag! The stock exhaust wouldn't work with the new heads so I had to go buy a set of headers. Sorry Superbuickguy but we will still talk later if you still have the exhaust system for sale. Got them on, starter is on but I still have to remember which wires go where. My PS pump is about 1/16" out of line with the crank pulley. It sets in more so it the belt isn't perfectly straight, not sure where I am going to go from here with that. I have the balancer bolt as tight as I can get it without feeling like it will break if I attempt to turn it anymore. Anyway, no start today so I will work a little more tonight in hopes for tomorrow.
you had to buy a set of headers? what? you can't ream out the hole to screw them in, oh well, that's one excuse to get more power by having to buy headers. how much is belt off by, a little will be tolerated, maybe dump the power steering, like super buick guy has gotten me to do...helps build the arms up..

Ha! Actually the stock manifolds wouldn't clear the top
Of the heads with enough room to put VC's on. I had planed to put headers on but was going to wait until later. Hahaha

well you have a lot more patience then me to wait for headers in the mail. I'd have broken out the grinder to make everything fit. just so I could hear it run.....
Ok this goes against what you guys have told me but want to check with you all about it. A friend says when he use to build engines, he would fire the engine for 3-5 sec before he put radiator on everything together just to keep from having to pull everything back put of there is a he would then put it all together and do the break in procedures. It makes sense but what say you?
don't make no sense to me, 3 - 5 seconds is not long enough to get any oil up into the top end but is long enough to wipe the lube off of the cam. if you have checked all hose connections you should at the most have a small leak that you can deal with while the motor is running. That of course is just my opinion and I am not a pro at this so take it for what it's worth
Only made sense in that you could hear if you had a rod knocking or something. I think (Unless told otherwise) I will go with what you guys have told me. Thanks bro!

I totally agree...lets get that mother fired up!!!!
go Fatcat, go, go.......
gonna be LOUD as hell, once you start it, gotta keep it going for break in. you sure....?
I don't think you should, with no backpressure, may have some issues with carb mixture, might be too lean? I don't know
I've used a garden hose in the bottom radiator hose to fire an engine but you'll have frozen water all over when you're done so stick with the plan and just hook up the alt belt. Don't worry about the power steering if it looks like it will be a problem 1/16 doesn't sound bad
Take your time and double check everything before hitting that key! You have one shot at breaking in that cam but since you put the ZDDP in a screw up may be forgiven
if it were me, i'd put it all together and i'd wait it out over night till tomorrow to start it. I do my best thinking between 1 and 3 am , don't know how many times i've woken up in the middle of the night only to remember something. Then you'd have plenty of time to try and remember anything that may have been forgotten.
But then again you've been working on this engine for a couple months now, you've probably looked it over a million times anyway...
Hahaha! I am going to be pushing it to for before dark! Doug1 what do you mean with the back pressure? My family is concerned a out starting it up on engine stands. Since I have never started an engine up for the first time what say you? I am concerned the exhaust heat could melt tires.

no mufflers, straight out the exhaust port on headers, may not be any validity to my concern, some one else needs to chime in. got any 2x6 pieces of wood, maybe soaked in water to deflect exhaust, idk, kinda crazy.
Well, I think we are ready to go! Tell me if I miss anything. Plugs in, dissy in, got spark, oil and zinc in, coolant full transmission cooler in, oil press gauge connected, temp gauge connected, Trans and throttle linkage connected, starter on and connected, batt charged, VC's on, need to connect heater core, alt in and connected, PS pump connected, belts on, coolant fan on. What am I missing? Ask me so I can confirm yes or no on the check list.

I've been told its not a good idea to run an engine without some form of exhaust hooked up. Don't remember why. From what I've read, you've done a great job so far. Don't risk screwing it up by being in a hurry now. It is at this point that you should take the most time. Get all your parts and install them correctly. Check and double check everything before firing it up. Even if you do all that there is a good chance you will have bugs. If you choose to fire it up without exhaust attached, you won't be able to hear if there is something not right.
