A slightly used Felpro gasket is a fine choice for a gasket, better than a new cheap gasket.

In the post is a 2-4 vette servo, filter, and a gasket/seal set.

Ha ha, i'm swimming in gaskets at the moment

Right, i've got the 700 back together with a B and M 70239 shift kit, vette 2-4 servo, seal and gasket set

[IMG][/IMG]

Just ordered from Summit -

Kickdown Kit, Aluminum, Natural, GM, Automatic, 700R4, 4L60, Kit
BMM-70237

Throttle Valve Cable Adapter, TV Corrector, GM, 700R4, 4L60, Holley,
HLY-20-121

Throttle Cable Bracket, Steel, Gold Iridited, Chevy, Big/Small Block, Holley, 4150/4160,
HLY-20-95

Flexplate Dust Shield, Steel, Chrome, Chevy, 700R4,
MRG-5135

Torque Converter Lockup Kit, Wiring Kit, Vacuum Switch, GM, 200-4R, 700R4, Kit
TCI-376600

I'm using a Holley 4160 600 vac sec so the correct brackets have been ordered.

Next to get is an OEM style throttle cable as we have a Lokar one on at the moment.

Also our speedo is electric so I need to work out how this works.

The prop wil need to be shortened and a new crossmember fabed up

There's a lot involved in converting from a 3 speed to a 4 speed, more than I realised.

Cost so far for the trans conversion

700 used - £175
Oven cleaner, brake cleaner and gunk - £25
Shift kit, gasket and seals, filter etc - £150
Parts listed above including torque converter - £500
Crossmember mod - £200 isn
Prop shortened - £150 ish
Shifter - £200
Odds and ends - £100

The 200 would have cost approx £300 more to build as it's in poor condition but I would have saved approx £150 on not getting the prop shortened.

That 700R4 is out of a truck because of the K on the case. 27 spline isn't the most desirable shaft from the early 80s but they will hold up to small block torque all day!

The head gasket hmmm, I won't do it unless I was broke and truthfully you have over a 95% chance it will seal !!! Just check your oil a lot the first 100miles looking for water and your coolant levels. If its gonna blow, it will happen soon after start up or extreme temps.

Hi mate, it's an '89 30 spline unit.

The gasket will be fine, that's why I pay the extra money for Fel-Pro's as they are reusable, done it may a time with the X-flows and Pinto's I used to build.

Just looked into the wiring side of the 700, the sensor on the TH350 uses a hall effect sensor for the speedo whereas the 700 uses an inductive sensor. We have VDO gauges on the Stude and looking at the instructions we can do it either way so we'll keep the stock 700 sensor and use this connector to splice into the wiring -

The lock up wiring will be sorted by the -

Also ordered a manual looking shifter, not a fan of the plastic looking square things, particularly in a '51 Stude, it's not the vibe

What's your plans on a trans cooler? The stude look like it has limited space. Worse than a vette

Yeah it is worse than the vette the firewall has been recessed just to fit the SBC in there.

It already had an oil cooler for the TH350, located next to the steering rack, we replaced it recently as a tyre garage crunched it with his jack

On a Buell motorcycle I have, space was really tight but I picked up two muffin fans. They're used to cool amps and computers . Zip tie them to a trans cooler and as long as you have an inch of space you can slip a trans cooler anywhere . It uses very low amps and it always keeps air moving over the cooler.

If you need a cheap fix

That's a great idea, we may look to reposition the cooler as it's a bit exposed where it is.

The Trans is now ready to bolt up to the engine, I have a few parts on order and i'll just drop the pan for that.

We got the rebuilt 700r4 and short block back in the Stude today.

F**k it was cold

So we, found TDC and mark it with the new tape, also measured the lift and inlet closing as we don't know the cam.

We also worked out the compression ratio which is 9.8-1 with the 58cc heads and a 0.041 gasket. The previous C/R was 8.25-1....

We also had to grind off the old TH350 crossmember and the next move is to see how to mount the new 'box.

Got the engine and box out again today....then back in again, fitted the pushrod guide plates and started rewiring the interior for the new shifter and electric speedo, we're also changing the centre console at the same time

Well I got the Stude finished a while back, since fitted a 2400 stall converter, new mini starter, new alternator, narrowed 31 spline 8.8, LSD, 3.73.

She ran 13.4 at Santa Pod recently, even with those reused Fel-Pro gaskets...Not bad for a smog bottom end, a tame cam and 113 heads from a swap meet.

The hood and trunk are going in for soda blasting and spraying next week to make the colours more uniform.
