Default Rear Spindle Torque Setting

I am installing the Right Rear Spindle, How much torque should be applied to the kingnut and how critical is the end play of .001-.008. If the cotter pic cannot be installed is that critical.
Help!!!
Thank you,

I think the clearances are pretty critical. The torque for the spindle nut is 100ftlbs.+ The plus means whatever it takes to get the cotter key in the next groove in the castle nut. I had almost 200ftlbs. on mine before I could get the key in.

This may help. It is full-size so loading may take some time.

By "the cotter pic cannot be installed" do you mean that the hole in the castle nut does nto align with the hole in the spindle or that the nut won't tighten down far enough to be even with the hole in the spindle?

By the way Mike, GM strongly recommends that you replace the spindle nut when you remove it. I hope I'm not too late on this

Thank you,
You should set it between .001 to .002 if possible.
If nearer to the .008, you will have sufficient wobble to cause air pumping from the caliper pistons which will kill your brakes.

I'd also recommend replacing the large washer that the nut rides against. It actually gets slightly distorted by all that torque and it's a good thing to replace along with the nut.

Try to get as close to .001 as possible, because after your initial run in you will gain .003 right away. So any setup over .005 would put you out of spec after only a couple of miles. :)
