Default hole in fiberglass under weatherstrip

Am getting 70 body ready for paint. When I removed the smal weatherstrip below the side of the windshield, I found a hole. This weatherstripping is exposed when the door is open. Its not the long pillar post strip that goes along the side of the windshield. Its the short one just below, and adjacent to it. There is a spot for a screw right in the middle of the weatherstrip. When I removed the weatherstrip, I found a small hole (the size of a nickel) in the fiberglass underneath that area. I was assuming I should fill this, but then found a very similar hole on the other side of the car. Are these holes supposed to be there? If they are, I can't imagine what purpose they'd serve. Steve

Hi Steve,
Here's that area on my mid-January built 71.
I haven't put all the original gunk back in this area so it's not too typical at this point but I think you can see what I found on my car
Regards.
Alan

Sorry for the switch from right to left!

Alan - everytime I see pictures from your car I am amazed. You did a fantastic job on your restoration! My car is in the shop so I cant look at it right now. After looking at yours Alan, I am beginning to think what I saw was the rounded cut out in the middle of the weatherstrip. I will be back to see the car on Friday and will take pictures then. Thanks for replies. Steve

Alan, in looking at your pictures i noticed the weather strip goes past the bottom of the pillar and transforms into a kind of tray to guide the water away.
What years have this tray extension? My 75 does not have the tray extension?

Hi M75,
I believe 68-71 cars had the windshield pillar weather strip with the 'gutter extension' on it; but the 72 model year, and newer, cars didn't have the 'gutter' anymore.
Regards,
Alan

Alan, thanks for the info. I just looked in a few of the Vette catalogs and you are correct about the years. When i ordered the weather striping for our 75 it looked just like the one we removed so i didn't question it.
