Default Click once when turning the key to start

I believe that maybe I should get my starter rebuilt (is it best to for the purposes of maintaining originality to rebuild?). When I turn the key, it might or might not just do a single click. Might do that 2 or 3 times, then it will hit and the car will start. Or it might start on the first try. I think when I was a kid, people used to say that it is caused by a flat spot on the starter or silenoid or some such thing. Never has failed me but one of these days.... Think it's the starter? Thanks.

Might be a bad conection. Corrosion on the batt to starter wire. You can disconnect the starter wires one at a time, clean them and the posts with a wire brush, put some dielectric grease on them and reconnect. Same with the battery terminals. Will likely solve the problem.

could also be the solenoid is on the way out it can be replaced separately but of course the starter would have to be removed. clean the connections first and if that doesn't solve the problem when the starter is out you can have it tested.

Sounds like a worn contact disk internal to the solenoid. Just replace it, or if you like taking things apart, you can flip the disk to the unworn side.

Bad solenoid is most likely the cause. The solenoid has the high current contacts in it; then it just sends power to the starter. It still could be the starter...but highly unlikely.

This may be a good time to replace with a mini high torque starter and you can put your original on the shelf (low shelf, they're heavy) and you're done
