Got the engine and trans into the car yesterday and have contact in the tunnel. I already have kieslers shim kit installed and it isn't enough. I'm thinking of adding aditional shim to that. Anyone have a feeling on the min amount of clearance that would work? Hopefully I won't have to shim up all the body mounts.
I'll also give Kiesler a call tomorrow
I had the same issue with a couple of TKOs in my mid years.
I found a solution here on the site somwhere, can't remember where?
You can buy a simple rubber sanding block from autozone for $5.95
and take a hack saw and cut it in half right where the slot is to hold the sand paper. Then wedge the half of the sanding block in above the cross member towards the center of the car. I took a floor jack and a piece of wood to spread the pressure and slightly jacked up the center of the floor pan where it has sagged over years of weight .
This step made it a little easier to wedge the sanding blocks in there.
This took care of my clearance problem..
Good Luck
We had to custom fabricate a new mount for the crossmember to allow the transmission to drop a bit to clear the tunnel on my 63. Never quite "perfect" fit ever...

If the car was perfect and not 42 yrs old it would probably a perfect fit.
there like us, sagging more as we get old

Sounds like something to try. How thick did the shims end up being and how much clearance did you end up with?
Just jack the body up until you hear 3 LOUD CRACKS and wedge a wooden block between the Xmember and the floor. Kiesler used to tell customers that they were suffering from "floor sag" not that they used a 73 or later Vette with rubber body mounts for the prototype which would give you another 1/2"-3/4" of clearance. Floor sag my AS*!

3 loud cracksI hope your saying that with tongue in cheek humor. Floor definitely does sag toward the center of the cross rail.
