MIke, I guess it depends on the nature of the vechicle you are protecting...
I did a latch relay setup in an old GTO I had once....had to first make sure the interior lights were lit, then turn the key to run position, meaning ignition ON, then hit first hidden switch, then second hidden switch, then the car would start...BTW it had an electric fuel pump....
all wiring was hidden really well....that should cover carb's cars....
NOW for my current vette and any computer run vechicle....you gotta find the controll wire, this is NOT the main power wires for the computer, but the controll wire, running the 5 volt TTl supply, this is the final signal wire to run the computer and engergise the fuel pump.....
now a latch relay setup would work....BUT....I got sneaky....
I put an old garage door opener receiver hidden in the car.....wired to the circuit of the computer mentioned above....NOW, I changed the color code of the wire to something that makes NO sense according to anything factory....
that frustrates hell out of theives....
now that opener does NOT activate one bit untill the key is ON, then you hit the auxilliary switch of the opener....works for the garage door on main button....and then you can start the car, but not untill then....
someone want to tear the damn car apart and then figger out all the wiring...or faster yet use a hook....welcome to it....
Old (10 years ago) NY city trick (never would condone this today) - 3 red roadside flares duct taped together with a wire tied to the fuses and run under the dash - not connected, but NO ONE was going to test it! :)
On my '77 I have a battery disconnect. If I'm worried about where I park, I undo the **** and put it in my pocket. They can push or tow, but It won't be as easy. :jester
I use a switch in my cigar lighter hole than interupts the signal to one of the small coil wires. Works great but it's not mt idea - others have one too.
I recommend Alpine alarm systems. If you install it yourself then it will only cost around $500 that includes door, hood, T-top switch alarms; starter cut-off relay;either motion detector (great for convertibles) or impact sensor; and pager (this is not an option in my opinion). The pager rocks cause if I'm in the supermarket and someone bumps into my car I get paged and can run out and look to see if there is any damage...if there is damage and the car is still there, then I got them raw...if they bumped me while leaving then it's possible that someone saw it happen and might help identify the car. It also gives me piece of mind so I can sleep.
Mike,
I purchased a keyed battery kill switch and then mounted it thru the battery compartment wall so that the key slot is flush mounted behind the drivers seat. It is virtually hidden and can be easily reached while sitting in the drivers seat. I did this mainly out of concern for an electrical fire while driving this old of a car. It serves three purposes. It can disconnect the battery at the first sign of smoke, it also keeps the battery from dying when the car sits up from several days and it is a pretty good anti-theft device. They can be bought at most auto supplies for about $50 and it is about a 20 minute install.
Works good for me.
Darn it, I thought I was the only one who had one of those. I dipped the red key in black plastic grip to make difficult to see. Also wired elec. fuel pump with hidden relay switch. My car has a bunch of Nitrous micro switches where the console "L-48" plate was and I figure the idiot will sit there and flick those swithes and watch all the pretty lights go on and off. He will even hear NOS fuel pump come on and think he's hit paydirt.
:smash:
jimvette, I got one of those James Bond controll consoles also....
intimidating as hell to look at, unless understanding what it does....
most theives will just turn away...figger they'r beat, they are....
I have one of those locks you install on the clutch (or brake pedal). Nice and visable, and I can't see how someone could cut through it very quick. I think corvette central sells one. I figure if the theif can't shift the car, it makes it pretty hard to drive. Also, it keeps the nuetral safety switch from working so just starting the car becomes a real pain too. :D
I have my EFI hooked to the keyless entry. No alarm, as noone cares anyway. The way it is hooked up, the engine will crank but not start unless you have the keyless entry remote. All boxes and wiring are placed in non-obvious places (very hard to find), and all wiring is done in non-standard colors and wrapped in friction tape.
I'm sure it can be defeated given enough time, but not in a grocery store parking lot while I'm getting my cereal.
I don't want an alarm becasue as far as I am concerned they do not help and are a major annoyance.
I figure my first line of defence is going to be a keyed switch for my 12 volt power to the distributor. the engine will turn but not fire. i am hoping this will discourage joyriders, which are who stole my truck( thiefs who wanted a getaway car).
Just as George said, If someone wants a car bad enough, , nothing is going to stop them, I am just trying to make it hard when the guys to try and steal anything of mine again.
I thought they quit making the Sears security battery? If not, I'm getting one for my truck and one for the vette!
