Default epoxy primer or primer filler?

Got the 4 or 5 coats of enamel, laquer, sealer and brown primer off my '70 project. It looks like I am down to the gel coat in spots. Is it best to use epoxy primer first then primer filler or just primer filler to start the paint process? Thanks

No glcoat on your car. Who's paint are you going to use, any repairs to the body?

I've used both.
I like the epoxy IF you have the car good and free of defects first.

The poly primer is nice if you have little nicks and scratches, but you HAVE TO use it quick, and almost have a gun just for it for that reason. I'm not sure what kind your using, but a lot of them dry in 15mins or less.

They both work well, but given a choice, I'd spend a little more time on prep with a final sanding of the poly primer if you want, and then use epoxy for the final coat before paint. The poly just always seems to be a little "chalky" after sanding, were as the epoxy is hard and smooth. The poly is basically really thin Bondo, and I wouldn't paint right over it, but many people do.

Just my 2c

No gel coat?? It does look like primer filler over the base fiberglass body. I am planning on using single stage PPG black. It has had some previous bondo work (but not much) in its former life. I will need to glaze over the bondo work and block sand it before it is primered.

I would shoot it with 3 wet coats of SPI black epoxy if the body is really good, and then sand it the next day. You will need to recoat within 7 days with your 2K build primer.

I have cheapy gun for the primer. I have used it before on another '70 project I have. I sprayed the primer filler wet sanded and shot a 2 stage paint job on it and it seemed seemed to be fine right on top of the 2k primer. This car I am working on now has had several paint jobs. I am just not sure what the first coat is on it now. It appears to be a 2k primer. The paint code says it was originally silver. I only see small signs of the original paint in the tail light sockets thanks.

Some guys have just used Slicksand polyester spray filler/primer over bare glass with good results. I think it shrinks down a bit so best to let it sit in the sun for awhile IMHO and I prefer a sealer over it.

If you are a PPG fan, then use their epoxy to lock things down, K36 and black paint. I like SPI since it is a whole lot thicker than PPG DP and you can actually build with it.

Thanks for all of the ideas guys.. I will look into 2k slicksand then epoxy over that before the PPG single stage black...sounds like a plan!

On my 71 I used epoxy sealer first, followed by poly primer surface, sanded, and then the epoxy sealer again. Been almost 10 yrs and no problems yet.
