Weighed My Car Last Night
My buddy and I took our cars to the local weighing station last night. I was expecting my car to be on the heavy side. My car locked in at 3,220lbs with a little more than 3/4 tank of gas and WITHOUT me in it. With me in the car it weighed 3,370lbs. I sure wish I had a set of aluminum heads to help lighten the load a little bit more....maybe down the road.

That's still a really good weight. Think about. 25 years of technology seperates your car from the new ones & yours is STILL lighter than the new Vettes. I guess that's why I'm having so much trouble being impressed with the new cars. If the materials are so much better & lighter now, why are they still hogs?

I don't think that weight is bad either. What's a new C5 weight?
Are you using an aluminum water pump & radiator? Aluminum heads will save you about 80lbs.

Re: Weighed My Car Last Night (1970 Stingray)
I think the new C-5's are around 3,400 & the Z06 is around 3,150. Someone please correct me if that is not accurate...

Steve:
I know what you mean. Personally I'd have a problem buying a car that a 540 big block won't bolt right in to (or a 522 w/ dual superchargers) :D.
Len:
Yes, I'm running an aluminum radiator, aluminum water pump, aluminum intake. I gained some weight by switching to the Lakewood Scatter-Proof Bellhousing. I thought the weight was pretty good too.

You're pretty close a C5 weighs slightly over 3,200lbs and a Z06 weighs 3115lbs. Just for comparrison a Viper weighs 3,440lbs.

Tha's not a bad weigh in at all, I know what you mean by wanting aluminum heads.

I think some members posted weights here a while ago and some of the later C3 are pushing 3600lb!

Re: Weighed My Car Last Night (jwatty)
Jwatty, gross vehicle weight refers to it's total recommended loaded weight with a full tank, 2 passengers, and some cargo.
Merlin, considering all the extra goodies and safety features C5's have compared to C3's, I'm impressed by the fact that they still weigh pretty close to stock base C3's and are lighter than many loaded ones.

Ha, I wish MY weight was 150 pounds.
The aluminum heads savings can vary. My 66 390 HP heads
weigh 65 pounds and GM ovals (and other aftermarket heads,
from what I understand) weigh 42 pounds. I think a lot of guys
base the savings on the old GM heads which were really light.
C3 heads may weigh more - did you weigh yours?
If I already had decent flowing iron heads I might not have spent
the bucks. That said - the front of the car and high in the car is
an awfully nice place to remove pounds...

Re: Weighed My Car Last Night (Steve439)
Vetterodder - Not too mention all the extra comfort goodies. It's a good point. Still, for a sports car they aren't exactly light. None of the new cars seem to be that light. Even some of the Lambos & Ferraris seem pretty heavy these days. I guess to meet all the federal restrictions, they have to add so much crap onto the cars that it's hard to keep them light. You have to pretty much do like the F50 & strip everything off it to get under 3K....
