Default 1977 steering column shroud install

my lower column shroud is cracked up pretty good,
had it taped together for a while and just ordered a replacement.

i admit im rather nervous to pull the whole column apart. i have read up on post about this by jim shea,

just wondering if there are any shortcuts?

was wondering if its possible to just slice it in 1/2 and install without taking everything else off.. as only the outside shell is cracked.

I'm not that familiar with the column shrouds for the later C3 cars. Does it require installation with the column removed from the vehicle? If so, splitting it and re-joining with epoxy and/or fasteners to assemble to the column makes sense to me...if the result is still visually pleasing. Much like the large plastic radiator shroud which is nearly impossible to assemble in a "whole" state.

I'm surprised that the replacement part is not already a two-part assembly, if column removal is required.

the hard part is that the shroud holds the key release lever in place... still investigating.

Alternately if i take apart the steering column ,will i need any special tools?
