Default I think I found my choke problem. . . .

The choke coil rod has come disconnected at the top. It was just hanging there. I need to get a another one of those retainer clips to keep it in place. Do you have to do anything special to put any tension on the coil, or do you just hook it back up?

I realize what the choke coil does as far as cutting back the choke as engine temp rises etc.

If this were disconnected, what other symptoms would this cause? Impaired engine performance? Faster than normal idle at operating temp? Bogging? I guess all of the above if the choke is partially engaged at all times.

Or would this be the case? I guess my question is does the choke coil only come into play when the car's operating temp is rising or is it an important part of the choke mechanism at all times even after the car is up to operating temp?

I seemed to be able to blip the throttle and get the choke to disengage and idle to drop to a normal level. However, once I drive it a bit, it seems to return to the higher idle at stoplights etc. Is the choke re-engaging even after the car is up to speed without this rod attached?

Please help. . .
