a 74 already has a true dual exhaust so set there. Torque is what moves a car when you "hit it". A 69-70 high compression L48 (ZQ3) is rated at 385 ft lbs so no slouch through about 4500 rpm. Simply add compression as stated above is my recommendation. There are cams that work with the lower compression engine but they typically move the rpm band higher.

Drive it first before you start buying parts. You may be surprised at what it can do stock (assuming in a good state of tune)

$3K? Buy a 'top end' kit. Edelbrock, Trickflow, Summit etc. Everything is matched so no guess work.

Kits start at $1650-ish, add exhaust, add ignition system.....

Or...clever fellow w/ a wrench ...tag-bag the L48 AND

Buy a whole brand new GM motor for under $2K and throw some time and ~ $1K at it for all new and close to 400 fwhp.
GM Goodwrench L31 Vortec 4 bolt main crate pn 12530283 (all Brand New NOT reman)... there's some on fleabay at $1825 free shipping includes spend-anywhere $50 giftcard. (maybe local GM dealer will match or beat?) Fleabay seller is Radley Chevy of Fredericksburg VA
get a melonized dist gear ($40), Jegs Vortec intake ($135), change the valve springs-retainers ($150-$225), rockers ($100-200) and Steel Roller LT4 Hot Cam ($200-300) AND pay a local machine shop to finish the fuel pump pad-boss ($100) ...make 375-400 fwhp on pump gas

'74 four speed flywheel won't fit '87-up one piece rear main seal crank ... add a new flywheel ($75)

Pull it and install a LS motor like I did. My 73 has never been better.

And NET HP in 74, Not Gross HP, like prior ratings to 1972......The L-82 with 250 net HP in 74 is pretty respectable and equivalent to the 1971 LT-1 GROSS HP rating of 330 HP.

BIG help.............thanks. I'm off to look at a '74 today......tach, speedo, horn and ac not working, needs manual windows switched to elect... $7500, sounds like too much to me. I'll drive it.if it 'moves'.....maybe worth $5k ? We'll see. Thanks again.

Yes. the L-82 made the same HP and TQ roughly at about 500 RPM lower revs than the 1971+ LT-1's.....

Maybe you already know, but if not ... typically, these fiberglass cars cost WAY more to paint than steel. If the candidate's gonna need paint, keep that $ in mind as you negotiate.

Also, seems the above x283 Vortec crate-Hot cam combo's likely to be as strong or stronger than any OE sbc vette 1971 thru 1982

yaaay ... CFB for fifth straight year, #2 Clemson crushes Carolina ... yaaay

I just read in the October 2018 issue of Corvette magazine that the L-82 with 250hp is a performance bargain compared to LT-1.

Yes, the 73-80 L-82's are all basically the same exact motor with different exhaust systems, carb tuning, and timing...THEY ARE THE SAME MOTOR! and not much different than a 71/72 LT-1 engine...that is the dirty little secret about C3 SBC engines....for the C3 corvettes. The only real impressive SBC V8's in C3's are the 69 L-46 350/350 and the 70 only LT-1 with 370 gross HP......
