Ok, currently the side exhaust on my '69 427/390 is thru the stock manifolds to side mounted pipes/mufflers under a body painted fiberglass cover. The style is similiar to the factory side exhaust, but, not alum. covers.
I'm looking to upgrade my exhaust, and my first thought was to get the Hooker sidemount headers with the JCL baffles (seen some guys with that combo here on forum, and it seems to be a good choice).
But, on the web site for the JCL baffles, they have a system that fits under the stock side covers, and connects to the stock exhaust. Anyone have experience with this setup? I'm hoping to get an idea of the trade-offs between the two setups.

Re: Side exhaust choices (Deslok)
I’ve been pondering how I’m going to get my 400+ HP 327 to exhale with manifolds and sidepipes as well. My first impression of those baffles is ‘too restrictive,’ or at least more restrictive then the alternative I’m probably going to pursue...
Ported manifolds
2.25” head pipes stepped up to 2.5”
mandrel bent pipe
4” round/2.5” i.d. Dynomax bullet mufflers (3 on each side)
I haven’t completed all the measurements, but I think they will just fit, snuggly. The cost will come in at around 450, minus the port job.
hello, I bought the pipes from ecklers, and had a "good" muffler shop fab some "no kink" pipes to connect my headers to the stock factory sidepipes. Any quality muffler shop can do the job for around 250 or less. However my floorboard gets quite hot with the necessary bends on the pipes. Banshee, are you covers the factory covers or the fiberglass replicas. If the fiberglass ones how did you get that aluminum/chrome look to them. I painted mine body color with black stripes, however i like the chrome look as well? Is it durable that color choice and looks good upclose. I didnt went with body color cause i wasnt sure that i could pass of the look of chrome and thought it wouldnt look good, but from your pic it looks real nice.

They are factory and installed in 1970 by the original owner.
This is now a high priority item for me. I have factory side ehausts - don't want to booger them up. In discussion, I heard of the JCL and requested info - just have not received it yet.
Banshee - 3 one each side? I contacted the mfg and this is their respnse..."In regards to your 1969 Corvette with a 426, if you use a Bullet muffler,
it would be very loud due to the smaller outer shell, which is why we list
it as race use only. If you were to use a Bullet, it would take a lot of
fabrication due to it's configuration as it only comes in a center inlet
and outlet style and your application calls for an offset inlet with a
centered outlet.
We do offer a Super Turbo #17764 and #17765 that includes the front elbow
and spout, however if you are looking for a higher flowing muffler, you can
use an Ultra Flo which has the same straight through design as the Bullet,
but a larger shell and can have the configuration that you need. You can
use a #17219 which has a 2 1/2" inlet and outlet and can be reversed for
use as a left and right muffler, but you will need to fabricate the front
elbow and spout as this is not included.
As for the manifolds, unfortunately we do not produce this item so you may
wish to contact Edelbrock to see if they have something for your
application."
I am concerend about sound - I do not mind quality "Barking" - but obnoxious resonance is not in my mind.
ALso - heat is a consideration - to protect my factory side exhaust covers and floorboard heat.
We are using the JCL baffle set-up on our 67 502. 3.5" pipe under stock covers. Sound is quieter than the stock side pipes. Performce is good I can't measure the improvement but it's there.

Kaiserbud. If I missed sending info, sorry about that. Tried your e-mail and it's down. Try: http://www.spiralturbobaffles.com Thanks, JCL :yesnod:

Yeah, 3 on each side "due to the smaller outer shell." What does the "center inlet and outlet style" of the bullet muffler have to do with the non-sidepipe Corvette muffler?
Banshee - on teh inlet/outlet thing, I thought the centered-up version would be a positive, but by reading the mfg's response I could not understand. No pics were attached either. When I read about my 426  adn then subsequent info within the letter, I figured that was a ded end as far as research.

Re: Side exhaust choices (kaiserbud)
Sounds to me like the Tech that replied to you doesn’t know Corvettes and was only referencing the mufflers available for your application. So, it seems to reason that the Dynomax guy/gal was thinking about a muffler replacement for standard Corvette exhaust.
