Beach Generator in Revere, Mass. rebuilt my stock 60 amp (1973) to 144 amp for a reasonable price.
One of the reasons I switched to a CS144-normal output is 140 amp-is that my 120 amp OEM type alternator could not keep up with an idle high load situation. Generally speaking high amp 10/12SI alternators are not a good idea since they were never made to produce 100+amp outputs. The casing cooling is not great for that level of output and the components will eventually burn out. If you need a 10SI high output alternator for occasional high amp output, it will suffice. The CS144-140 amp alternator puts out 60 amps at idle!!
I am thinking about running two alternators…one for the engine and EFI stuff..and the other for the 900 watts of power my amp. is making pushing the two 8in subs and 2 sets of component speakers.

No need to-They sell CS144 alternators with 200/250 amps!!!! These alternators have excellent cooling for added capacity and you can get them with external rectifiers as well for added cooling.

Both a stock CS130 or CS144 could power that load.
That is correct the alternator has to be clocked for our cars and the place I bought my CS-144 did that before it was shipped. My shorty headers are ceramic coated-no issues. When I bought it a few years back, I recall it was $169/179 new-great alternator.Clocking your alternator yourself is not hard-just loosen and remove the casing bolts, slightly separate the 2 sides and turn to the desired position-not a big deal if you have to do it yourself.
Another question : how does the CS130 or CS144 work with tall valve covers and how close does the distributor get to them ? I have a space limited combo and the alternator currently is almost at the end of the adjustment outward.
