Default Trip Odometer cable.

Anybody know how to route this cable and miss the support brackets for the steering wheel? Regardless of how I do it the bend is to tight and binds the cable. The car is a 71 convertible.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. Just empathy, mine is the same way. Dave.

I believe many folks route and connect the cable with the cluster pulled out for easier access. Then they slide the cluster in and the cable pushes against the brace. This of course causes the cable to bind and in my case it actually bent the speedometer head. I discovered this after having a frame-off completed on my '73 convertible.

My tripometer would not work (it had worked prior to the frame-off) so I removed the cluster to investigate only to discover the kinked cable and damaged speedometer head. I purchased a new speedometer head and then carefully examined how best to avoid kinking the cable. In my case I determined that feeding the cable over the brace with the cluster in place and then routing it down to the bracket worked just fine. No kink and long enough to reach both destinations.

Good luck... GUSTO

Hi,
Here's a couple of pictures of the cable and it's bracket in their typical installation.
Perhaps it will help
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan. That's the way I had it but it bumps into the bracing for the steering column.

Hi R,
Is the brace it bumps one of the braces added to convertible cowls?
If so it would be a help to hear from a convertible owner.
Regards,
Alan

Well.....that explains why my reset cable works perfectly.

The previous owner removed the brace....I'll make one that has a bend to allow for the reset cable. The only good thing about not having a complete car is "being able to improve on the GM design so that things fit/work correctly"....LOL.

Can someone post a pic of the original brace in place/thanks.

I managed to get mine working, bought a new cable and dropped the column and pulled the gauge cluster back for access, didn't take any pictures but it was not terribly painful with everything pulled apart. I'd say pull it all apart and then try...

Here's a picture. Cable and odometer connection lines up with the lower leg of the bracket and forces a tight bend.

My 75 convertible did not have all the braces when I took it apart so I found the missing brace on line and added it. It made it so tough getting that cable correctly placed as well as getting the speedometer cable back on. I got the dash all back together and speedometer works, but odometer cable is crimped and will not turn. Leaving it for now.

I going to do the same thing. Spent to much time on it already. Every time the dash gets pulled an reinstalled you take another chance of something else going wrong.

Hi R71,
Until I saw your picture I thought you were asking about the trip odometer reset cable/**** not the speedometer cable. (that's what my pictures show). Which are you asking about?
Are you sure the speedometer cable is coming through the proper grommet in the firewall and is the correct length?
The AIM shows a clip that holds the cable tight to the steering column… is there one on your car?
Regards,
Alan

The trip odometer cable is the problem. Speedo is fine. Picture was just to show the bracing.
