Default 77 engine install trouble

got engine lined up with motor mounts. front holes on mounts line up but it seems back of engine has to be lowered about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch for them to line up in back. i installled bell housing bolts first and thought that may have been the problem so I loosened them. Do I need to take them out for engine to tilt back. thanks

I'm not clear on the problem. Which motor mount bolts are you talking about?

seems i remember having a similar situation when i installed my engine several years ago with the th350 still in the car. i had to loosen the rear transmission crossmember and lower it slightly for them to line up then just jacked it back up and retightened.

I get you now. I've certainly had to do the same. Just be carefully of the fan shroud, the oil pressure sender and the distributor. None of the above like to be pressed against things.
