My question is this: is there a way to clean all the passages out without taking it to a radiator shop, having them hot tank it, rod it out, and then tell you that the radiator is shot and you need to buy a new core from them?
I am planning to take the radiator out of the car and was wondering if there is something I can put in it that will eat all the scale out of it.
I know it needs it because once upon a time, I could take that thing anywhere and the temp guage would never move from 180 degrees. On this 1000 mile trip I just finished, I noticed that the faster I went the hotter it got. At 60 it would run about 180 or so. At 65 it would run a little hotter. At 70 it would run about 195. If I stopped in traffic after running 65 or 70, it would jump to 200.
The radiator has not been out of the car in a looooong time. I am just looking for something that I can do myself to clean out the radiator and get the gunk out of it. Are there any fixes out there??
Well, like I said, I am going to take the radiator out of the car. I am willing to use anything that will eat the gunk away. But definately don't want to run that sort of thing through the entire system. Just want to clear the tubes in the radiator.
Re: Radiator needs "Rodding" out (dladd74roadster)
You have to run it throught the whole system. The chemical usually need to be in there for awhile and at operating temperature.
The reason the car is getting hotter is scale. scale builds up is because the slow speed the fluid is moving at. This scale is very hard, made up from rust and calcium mainly. SO the cleaner has to be very caustic and needs to be in there for a bit to eat the deposits away.
So just laying the radiator flat on the ground and with the hose necks up with the cap on and filling the radiator with the chemical and letting it sit for a while won't disolve the scale? Heck, I could let it sit there for days if needed. Just wondering because I just don't want to take it to a radiator shop if I don't absolutely have to.
