Default Blower Motor

The heat/AC blower on my 1980 is getting noisier. I know it is time to replace and I have been following the posts on the C4 wheel upgrade. I'm sure I have seen a post on the differences in the wheels used on the C3's through the years, but I have been unable to find it in searches. I think it said the wheels on the late C3 have the same pitch as the C4 wheels. Has anyone done the C4 mod on an 80-82? If so, how much did it improve the air circulation? Is it worth doing the upgrade? Thanks.

I messed with it a little. When I put the new motor in I forgot all about new fan blades. Motor made a ton of difference...

The conversion I saw the guy used a 1/4 piece of plexiglass and cut it out to match the fans flange. Basically he shimmed the fan a 1/4 out from the firewall because the squirrel cage is a little wider.

I did the conversion in my '81. I also made a bigger ground wire and moved the ground to an ac compressor bolt. It blows a ton better. My mistake was making the spacer out of 1" ABS. It was too darn hard to cut. Use another material that is easier to cut such as MDF board or plastic cutting boards.

I did it on my '71 and my friend in Louisiana did it on his '81. We both used 3/8" plywood for the spacer and YES they move a LOT more air. About 50% more.

Here's a picture of the 3/8" plywood spacer that is needed.

Anyone use a piece of 3/4 inch rubber for the spacer? I would think much easier to fabricate AND will help absorb any vibration from the motor.

I used 3/4” plywood to fab my spacer... and although it’s really more like 5/8” thick. Also used a thin foam gasket between the adapter/spacer and the blower housing to further improve the sealing around the integral riveted fasteners.

you don't need 3/4 or 1 inch .. 3/8 inch spacer is all it takes.with stock C3 motor and C4 wheel. . and a good ground wire...seal the box, they are known to leak against firewall. it moves a lot more air for sure
