Default 3D Printed Air Cleaners on my 82 Crossfire



I wanted to share with you all the future of customization.
Here are pics of my 3D Printed Air Cleaners with K&N Filters.
The pics of them on the car with the stock hold downs back from chrome

Its amazing what them 3d printers can due, out of curiosity how much did they charge?

The material is very expensive.
It is my design. I worked with another engineer with a CAD program. Sent out the .stl file to site that has a Fortus system to have them printed.

But for one off manufacturing. It works the best.

I am hoping to do more work like this for anyone interested.

What is the melting temp of the plastic? It is melted as it comes out of the print head off the spool. Just wondering about that for use with other products on the car.

This material is Ultem 9085 and is extruded at 380 degrees Celsius / 716 Fahrenheit.
There is a new Material Ultem 1010 that can be mounted to the engine block.

Oh my yes. Everyone probably has a list of parts they'd like to make. My wish list includes a cold air duct that attaches under the hood to feed air from in front of the radiator to a 14x3 filter, a subtle early Z/28 looking rear spoiler and a variety of underbody panels including tray that replaces the spare carrier and keeps air out of the well.

Any idea when this might be a practical reality?

Is that ABS plastic printing? If so be careful of the heat.
You could still make a mold and cast them in fiberglass.
Neat use of 3D printing tho.

I was thinking the same thing, how much heat can the 3D material handle before it distorts. You also loose the seal to outside air.

They are all reality. How much do you want to spend? We can print the ducting out of Ultem tan or black. They rest printed or carbon fiber layups.

The air gap is zero percent. No air is moving through the layers.

Ultem has the properties of aluminum. Can take heat to 190 C 374 F easily. I have had them on a month with no distortion, discoloration.. nada.

Very cool I was lookin into a 3d printer but the cost is still out of reach but coming up with stuff like this could definitely offset the cost.

That's very interesting.
I wonder how long before someone comes with a replacement for Fast's LS intakes. They are so pricey printing two or three of them would pay off the printer.
I'm also thinking ITB, another insanely pricey part.

I bet printing with those plastic take an hotter nozzle.

Really depends. If you build it yourself you get in the 2-3k$ range (last time I checked).
