considering doing it myself. Anyone with experience in doing it? How tough is it? Tricks? Special tools?
I have done at least 100 of them over the years and its not a hard job if you have the tools needed to set the pinion depth and you can make those tools yourself. After the tools are made you can figure on the job taking 4-5 hours or so.
I have done so many gear changes/overhauls on GM/Mopar and even one Ford gear set over the years, it's not all that hard, you need pay attention to the gear pattern as you rotate the pinion with some drag on the output/ring gear.....and pay attention to end slop on the outputs of any C3 diffy.....it really is not rocket science.....so read up on the shop manuals.....
I have driven my cars for cross country and around town for years, no sweat....my '72 has done the same for some 20 years....
and YES I have had advice from guy who know, over the decades.....
