Who's running a Super10 rear and how is it holding up?

Hey Mike,
When referring to the shock, that is the main concern especially with a 4 speed. I would also have to assume the shock load would be the same with an auto and a T- brake correct?
When you see or hear about a broken rear, how often is the case getting damaged? If its only the carrier getting broken and replacement of bearings, can that be repaired for less than $1,700?
Basically can you build and repair a Super 10 for the cost of one 12 bolt?
Its a tough decision due to the cost....if the added expense was under a grand it would be a much easier decision for me. It really seems hard to pin point how much power a Super10 can handle with a manual. But also there is no guarantee a 12 bolt can handle large shocks either correct?
If there was someone that said they have a 12bolt and a manual and it sees drag time with sticky tires and it sees hard launches regularly and lives....well then it would be a very simple answer for me. I would spend the extra money in a second! but no one has said anything like that, or if they have I have not read about it or heard anything close to it.

Nice That clip was sweet ,
I am as fast , if i could use my MT street radials and launch like I should ,I have to use cooper passenger car tires and take off at idle so the dana 44 dont go BOOM again.
That Manual is hurting his times IMOP

I never get tired of watching those videos. I think Doug Plette was driving in the first video and I think Jim Moore was driving in the second. Alan was driving in both of his.
So even though they both turned roughly the same times, you can see that Snowman's 71 was more violent on launch and shifting compared to Alan's. Alan has spent a lot of time testing and tuning on his but Snowman's was a fresh build with less than 20 miles on the entire car and no passes.

I always wonder what GM did to the rear ends of the L88s and ZL1s and some other concept '69/'70 Corvettes to hold on with the huge torque of these engines. Just look at that photo (circa 1969) when a number of journalists were playing a concept LT-2 Corvette at the drag strip, it has a TH-400 and a 4.88 rear gears :

Didn't John Lingenfelter build a Dana into an IRS for his Super Stock Corvette back in the early 70's? I believe NHRA allowed it as he convinced them it was a "safety related" modification.

Mike, do you know is Snowman's car is still going strong? It doesn't look like he is doing any clutch slipping! If it is still holding up that answers my question on which rear to go with because I know that 555 is making some serious tq!

Thanks Mike, I did not know that. I would love to see pictures of it.
I remember reading an article about it back then in Hot Rod or Car Craft, but don't remember many of the details of how John did it. I do remember he was very satisfied with the resulting durability and often wondered why it didn't seem to catch on.

The clutch is a twin disc McCloud RXT with a hydraulic throwout bearing. The clutch master is a stock 85 chevy truck unit that I threaded and put a spherical bearing on.
And it has a double pumper on it.
