Theres a difference between driving a car hard and abusing it ditto on driving a sportscar like a 499,000 mi vega with a leaky headgasket and a flat tire. Does not compute

How about owning 3 Vettes and telling someone you are "toobroktoretire"

Desperate for a car show to watch, I started streaming "Street Outlaws". I got halfway into the 2nd episode when one of the guys, with his wife and children in the picture, stated "If I had to make the choice between street racing and paying the mortgage, I'd go racing."
From what I saw in the picture, they weren't living in a mansion. I'm not special or anything, but I would classify what I saw in the limited view provided as "meager".
I chose not to switch programs and not watch "Street Outlaws". In my mind, doing so would somehow encourage this type of backward, selfish behavior.
I drive my car the way it was intended to be driven.
I don't hold the brake to do a burnout. I don't drop the clutch. I don't do a no-lift speed-shift from 1st to 2nd. I don't put the car away "wet".
I do get the car sideways. I do floor it and run it up to 6,000 RPM (engine good to 6,500). I bend the car into a turn. I shift crisply, but not fast enough to grind the gears. I have fun with it.
I can afford to drive it.
I can afford to fix it. It may take me a while ($5,500 engine took me 16 months between pulling it and getting it back on the road), but it gets done according to the schedule set by comfortably available funds.

I have wondered about this mentality.

Certainly they spend a lot of $$$ on the cars/trailers/racing....and it could be spent on a nicer home etc....but you can see same stuff with the hunters, skiiers, motorcycle folks, fishermen etc etc. Hobbies are just that. Never would I let my family suffer for a hobby...the broke junk will sit until the $$$ are available just as you said. Of course sponsors help too!

Reality shows are nothing but a pile of crap, all exactly the same. All made up drama and nothing to do with reality. Americans should be ashamed of themselves for making this crap popular....any of them.
As for beating on a car, I have too much respect for the cars, motorcycles, and airplanes I have owned to beat on them. The idea that "that is what they are for" only comes from the mouths of ........ not going to even say.

Laffin'!!!
Sorry....when I've flown a plane...I love to bank it every once in awhile..and climb...and dive.......
And I went through the "crotch rocket" stage in my younger days...now I'm content just cruising a scooter.
Might as well drive a Prius....?

Thank God, for my little **** of a Corvette! Sassy loves to get it on and get it on good! She loves to mix it up, when Shelby and Roush Mustangs pull up alongside, romping on it and believe me, Sassy, will romp and stomp, right there with them.
She loves the drag strip, the burn out box and will pull her little L48 heart out, all the way to the end.

Street Outlaws is great, best show on TV. Posed as real illegal street racing it is not but still what you see is what they are doing, racing each other on the street. I noticed my goatee was getting a bit longer the other day
The Cuda below has seen the real deal street racing, almost every Sat. night back when street racing was legal ( only kidding ). I remember a Boss 302 I could never beat with my big block, man that thing just buzzed

I've taken care of my '72 for over 41 years and want to see her last a while longer, so NO, I never beat on her. That's what the leased Silverado is for. If I get into any trouble, I've got a shitload of metal surrounding me!

It's kind of like, when you borrow Aunt Mabel's or Grandma's 1969 Oldsmobile Delta 88, that never got driven hard. You know the feeling, when you tromp on the big pedal and all you get is a big blah and then a reluctant acceleration.
The only parts you'll wear out are engine, transmission and suspension and all that is replaceable. In fact, if you make sure it's rolling, even for just a half second, you'll likely break nothing at all. The only thing I've replaced in three years of doing scores of burn outs, is the clutch and the pressure plate (x2) and I had a hell of a lot of fun, lighting it up, feeling the posi rear end grab and watching the front end rise up, while I get pushed in the seat.
Sorry, bro, it's just better in a Corvette (and of course, it's just my $.02, too).

In fact, I was so inspired by this article, that at lunch, I went and grabbed Sassy out of the shop, went out to eat and then on the way back, we've got a nearly half mile, perfectly straight four lane road heading into the airport / plant and you can guess what I did, when I turned the corner and found it empty and devoid of traffic...
