Default Heater Question

My heater stopped working over the summer and I didn't mind one bit. :jester I figure the vaccumm switch in the hose froze stopping water from reaching the heater core and I would replace it when it got cooler outside. Question: What else could it be if not the switch and how can I test it to make sure? Also, in a previous post I was told that the hot water is always flowing through the switch and will close when vaccuum is removed from the switch like when I slide the hot/cold lever to cold. Is this true? How does this work?

Thanks..

Default Re: Heater Question (Koz)

It has been a while since I messed with this but I think I remember. The vacuum controlled heater valve out in the eng compartment will shut of water with vacuum applied. Pull the vaccuum hose off this valve with the eng running. Put the temp control lever to hot, should have no vaccuum at the hose. Then put it to cold, should get vaccuum. If this check is good, you need to replace the valve. If it doesn't operate like this then you need to pull the glove box out. (not the door) You will see your heater box, door, and the cable from the temp control lever. On top of the door is a vaccuum switch. With the temp set to hot the switch should not be depressed which guts off vac to the valve, when it put to cold, the door should swing shut and depress the switch sending vac to the valve and shuttint off the hot water. Hope this helps. lou
