Default Paul Dana Cold Air Intake - GROUP BUY INTEREST CHECK

Hey everyone,

I've been talking with Paul Dana about starting up a group buy for the cold air intake he created for C3 Corvettes. Paul has spent years designing and tweaking his intake and has the results to show for it.

I'm sure he'll be jumping in here shortly, but in the meantime, how many of you would be interested in getting a group buy going?

Interested list:

Metalhead140
Richard Daugird

Will it fit under a stock 80 hood with a Performer RPM intake which is higher than stock and Performer intakes. Q-Jet carb. Currently running a offset, 1 1/2" drop air cleaner. (to clear dist). In other words, would I need a different hood with Paul's unit?

Hey rdroket,

Paul and I have not finalized a price yet as we still need to sort out the logistics. We wanted to get an idea of how much interest there is in a group buy before nailing all the details down.

Possibly interested, depends on the answers to those questions. It's really cool. I admire it.

Were back:-)

I have them on eBay for $500 plus $50 shipping....

It will be a less, maybe a lot less depending on how many are interested...

It takes A FULL TWO days of work to produce one unit.... the air filter plates are Moroso and have a cost to me from 60-100$

The basic units are black with a Chrome A/F ... if you supply your own top and bottom lids, this will knock down the pricing accordantly..

They are gel coat and can be made in many different colors for about $50 over the black units... but since not paint, color will never come off..
Any questions I would be happy to answer...

Testing:

The unit showed a 50-70* drop from underwood temps at speed...
and the ram air affect showed a positive bowl pressure of .2psi (as oppesed to a negative bowl pressure of 0.1psi with standard A/F)

Also, during summer time driving, predestination was noticeabley dropped.

Yes... but you have to have electric fans... The stock fan shroud will not work with this unit.

I will post more pictures tonight

As a quick fix, can the shroud be modified or is the stock fan in the way?

I believe the stock fan will hit it... When i designed them i used my car of course,,, and i had electric fans so i never worried about the stock fan...

As the stock fan can consume as much as 20hp from a car, most performance cars run electric... like they do in all new C4 and up corvettes..

I really do not understand your question... sorry.

but if you are asking if they fit a Big Block chevy gen1 i do not see why not.. the carb placing is the same, the radiator placement is the same...
Thus there should be no difference ...

I think he's asking if there is an "oblong" unit that would somehow fit a dual quad setup.

Two 4 barrels.

I'm taking a wild stab in the dark that's a negative...

if i can get a upper and lower A/F that fits, and it is the same diameter outside... it should fit.

So... depends if i can get a round A/F like Moroso..

I have one of Paul's CAI's on my 1981. 383 SB Paul provided a Moroso drop base which I believe is 1.5"

It works with an RPM Air Gap, but is tight right at the front of the hood. There were some very slight rub marks on the outside "shoulders" of the front piece that fits to the top of the Rad. Had about 3/4" clearance between the hood and air cleaner portion.
One issue with the Air Gap is that there is interference at the water neck. I had to reshape the CAI to accommodate. Swivel water necks are even higher and would require more modification. Just pointing this out, not a problem for me.

I have since changed to a Torker II with a 3/4 " spacer and no clearance issues at all.

I also have a GM serpentine set up and there is interference at the tensioner to have the unit centered. Required a small notch to fit over part of the tensioner. Again, not an issue for me.

I am quite happy with the quality and function of Paul's CAI.

Kevin

I will get some pics later.

I have two - four barrel carbs on a Big Block Chevy, are you planning on making some to fit something like this?

By the way, they look real nice!

Thank you so much for the input.. Pictures would be amazing, as I have lost all that I had of other C3's I have done... What gen was your intake do you know? Was it my final redition version 6? 5 is so close to 6... Just 6 uses different seals other than the 3" rubber band...

Also.. Water neck.. You must have a after market... The stock on on mine worked as well as the current adjustable one (will shoe in picture next post on this thread). What water thermostat housing are you using??

Thank you so much... Can you post a picture of your bottom plate? My sons do fab work on the side for our race cars and if it will fit in the bottom hole of the CAI I may be ably to make it work...

I always wondered about fitting with FBody serp...If you use our drop base do we send it to you or do you just not send one with the CAI?

Drop base came installed on the unit.

Mine is a Gen 6 without the rubber band. You had just come out with that when I ordered.
