Default Mufflers Whats Inside

I am re configuring a set of Z06 titanium mufflers to work on my 69.
Converting them to the offset 2 1/2 inlet and 2 1/2 outlet like on a C3.
I know whats inside the Z06 mufflers but not what I should change it to.
If you have pictures of the inside of a stock or performance muffler I would like to see them.
If you have knowledge of muffler design I would like to discuss how to reconfigure the mufflers and still keep it relatively quiet .

Not sure if this is what you are after but this is a Magnaflow style muffler. It's made by Jones Exhaust and is about half the price of Magnaflow.

One of the best options for flow and noise reduction would be the original style chambered mufflers that came on your car. I don't know if those are still available, but that's what I had on my '72 and '73 BBs. I was never even tempted to change them out. They flowed extremely well, and they had a reputation for that. Several tests of the day showed power losses with other mufflers. FWIW, glasspacks are pretty much the worst when it comes to noise VS performance.

Our mufflers all use a straight-through design, and still dampen sound as much as a standard muffler, without hindering performance. We'd be happy to help you pick out the correct one for your car!

Those mufflers will be pretty loud, if you want the same sound but less noise then look at the same brand mufflers that are a few inches longer.

At the bottom of this page in the Similar Threads section is a thread entitled
Inside a stock muffler
from the C5 Tech section
It has pictures of the inside of a stock Z06 titanium muffler.

This is what I have.
I want to convert it to an offset 2 ½ inlet 2 ½ outlet suitable for use on a C3.
I have 2 ½ perforated straight titanium tubing to accomplish this.

The question was and still is,

How to connect the inlet and outlet without overly restricting flow and still have a relatively quiet muffler?

Pictures of cut away mufflers and the inside of mufflers is the point.

johnt365

Thanks for the picture.
The inside of a muffler was exactly what this thread was about.

I would like to see the inside of a stock chambered muffler.
Lots of information on making the identical copies, but nothing of how they are configured inside.

Do all your mufflers have straight though curved perforated pipes?
Please show some cutaway pictures of your products.

Yes, all of our mufflers will use a straight-through design with perforated core.

I had a cutaway view of the stock early-'70s mufflers in a book or magazine at one time, but that was 35 years ago. The best I can offer after three decades and four moves is to suggest that you Google "muffler cutaway" to get a general idea how chambered mufflers are constructed. FWIW, the big advantage to chambered mufflers is exactly that - the chamber. Air mass is very effective at muting sound pressure waves, more so than installing dampening material behind perforations.

Coincidentally, I've just discovered part of my exhaust is rusting through. If I decide to replace the entire thing (and I probably will), I'll be looking for a set of early mufflers. I don't know if this design is still available, but that's where I'll start the hunt.

Here's a look inside one of our 50 Series Delta Flow mufflers. We use kit-only versions of this muffler in both of our Force II systems for 68-69 Corvettes. These Force II systems produce a moderate exterior and mild interior sound level. If you are looking for that classic chambered sound, these Flowmaster kits will get you there.

The 11366 Magna flows above are great have them on 2 of my vettes, with an X pipe and even on a 500 plus HP 406 sbc not too loud and nice sound to them.

Just be aware that what sounds good at idle and low speed can also be really annoying at highway speeds. At speed, the constant drone of a resonant frequency (from a poorly baffled muffler) can get tiresome very quickly.

If you do much highway driving with your C3, make sure you know how a specific muffler will sound at speed before you purchase.

I've got Pypes RacePros on my 555" and really like them. Noise at low speed is cool...but they do get pretty loud when you stuff your foot in them.

I do admit to liking Flowmaster 2 chamber sounds. I've used a bunch of them. A buddy has them on a pretty nasty 388" engine in his '65 and it sounds 10 times better than mine does at idle and low speed.

You can spot the Flowmaster sound from 3 blocks away!

Years ago I opened up the OEM mufflers on my '88 5.0 Mustang. They were actually very decent designed inside with low restriction. Of course I gutted them anyway and reinstalled them as part of my "stock sleeper" approach to winning a few races to help make the payments! Later I stuck on Flow's because of the sound. (Still got them on the car today!).

I had the stainless Flowmaster 50's on my Vette before I put the side pipes on. They were a tight fit with the longer case size but did not have the drone the 40's are known for. They are currently on my Father-in-Law's 1970 Charger and they still sound great.

Best sounding, worst flowing mufflers ever....

I do like them, and recently bought a set of Delta 40s for my dad's mild 358" SBC, they sound great on just about anything, but I wouldn't run them on anything that's making over 350-400hp....They just don't flow well...

A buddy of mine has a 78' Malibu with a mild/oldschool 468", 3" exhaust with x pipe to 2 chamber Flowmasters (the black/square ones like the original style from the early 90s), 3" tail pipes over the axles. He has QTP cut outs on it as well right before the muffs. On the chassis dyno, he gains 27 rwhp with the cut outs open... A-B-A test style, and this is only on a 350 rwhp car....

Now the Flowmaster shootout mufflers, that's another story...

On most cruiser type cars, 2 chamber Flows are great...
