Default How hard to build a blown pump-gas small block ~500hp?

My 75's 350 is horribly underpowered and I'm thinking about rebuilding it to go with a blower.

How hard would it be to rebuild and add a blower for less than $5,000 - $6,000 (Less if even possible) and end up with nearly 500hp on 91 octane gas? I'm somewhat of a beginner so I don't know how much work I can do on my own, but I plan to do whatever I can myself.

I can't seem to find any good sources about this as I see a lot of conflicting stories about getting good power curves and decent reliability on that budget

Edit: Also; I'm sure most parts on my engine are capable of being re-used as the engine has less than 6 years and 30,000 miles on it and some decent parts, but lacks anything decent for camshaft/pistons. But I'm also not sure what parts would be recommended for a blown engine making that kind of power. It has roughly an 8.5:1 compression, but has limited flow 305 heads which I'd plan to replace

Call them and ask, I'm sure they customize the kit for the limitations of your short block.

Heads and a blower will set you back close to 4 grand. Blowers arent real practical for a daily driver.

For 5 grand you can get a 383 thats in the 500 HP area, or you can build a really strong 350 with real high compression and lots of go fast parts.

And no, they (blowers) arent just plug and play. Everything has to be matched together or you will be cramming a fuel air mixture into the engine that it cannot consume properly. Im still novice when it comes to serious engine building, but blowers are a whole other ballgame. My suggestion is to just add a cam, heads, and exhaust to your car (about 2500 bucks) and you will net another 100 HP.

No need to with a power adder. You can get there naturally aspirated with a 383 with good heads, intake, exhaust, and valve train.

With the right high flow aluminum heads, roller cam of moderate lift/duration, compression (10-10.5:1, new pistons/rings) with your 350 you can get very close to 500 Gross HP...fairly easy to get to 450-460 Gross HP with the right combo with a 350-355 (bored .030). Unless you are looking for 500+ Gross HP, I would save the money on the crank/rods needed for the 383 conversion. If you plan on pulling the OEM 350 to be stored, than a 383 crate motor would be the most economical way to make decent Gross HP, but most 383 crate motors are in the 425-450 Gross HP range....very similar to a built 355. I would forget a blower....not worth the trouble for that HP target

For some years now we've been at 500 HP on the 383" platform, using the conventional G.M. castings, e.g., the "010" blocks. These are all "bolt-together" builds, hyd-roller's, absolutely no chasing HP. These are within your budget parameters.

For some time also on the 400" (SB) platform we've been over 600 HP. These are slightly more expensive than the 383" builds and we prefer an aftermarket block for this build due to the higher power. These are a bit outside your parameters.

One of our pump-gas 400" SB's is in '72 Chevelle, weighs near 3800# with the driver/fuel, and runs 10.50's @ 125 all day long.

(Add) The point here is you can get the power w/o the blower. If you just want the look it would be an easy HP number with the blower in the program.

Thanks, Gary in N.Y.

P.S. It all comes down to how deep one's pockets are? What I've learned doing this for a living, it is far better to have more power and not need it than to have not enough and need more!
