Which Edelbrock for a '73 L82?
Looking to replace the stock Rochester Quad. on my stock L82 (automatic).
Looking at an Edelbrock. Would like to keep stock linkage and air cleaner. Is this possible and which Edelbrock part number would fit this application with the least modifications?

Both are intended as direct replacement and guarantee hood clearance.
If you haven't already, have your distributor recurved and carb tuned for performance. Will liven things up more than an intake swap.

Edelbrock 2101 is the non-EGR and 3701 is the manifold if you have EGR valve.

I wouldn't advise using the edelbrock carb, on a stock manifold. You should pair the carb up with an edelbrock performer series intake.
When I bought my 73 L48, it had an Edelbrock 1406 600 cfm carb on it. It also had the performer series aluminum edelbrock intake manifold. It also had an electric choke. I know that this carb wouldn't fit the original manifold. My car is a four speed. The port for the egr valve was capped off. You'll need to change your fuel line connection too. The edelbrock needs an inline filter. As far as using the original air cleaner you'll need to make an adapter because the OEM air cleaner base will not clear the fuel line connection on the edelbrock. What I did was bought a pkg. of Mr. Gasket plastic adapters. There was one in the pkg. about 1/4 inch thick. I set it on the carb and set the ac base on it. Then marked where a notch was needed so the ac base will sit correctly flush on the carb adapter ring. Then I filed out the notch. This small amount of height will let the ac base clear the fuel line going into the carb. It will also let the hood close safely. I placed chalk powder on the ac rubber seal then gently closed the hood to make sure there was clearance. No white marks appeared on the underside of the hood. Now, in your case your L82 intake is different than mine so you better make sure it clears. I'll post some pics to show what mine looked like. I've since removed them both and re-installed my original intake and Q-Jet.

I hope this pictures helped with your decision. Now, I'm not sure if the carbs mentioned above by another poster fits our cars any better than the one that my previous owner installed on mine. At least you'll know what you may need to do and what changes will be needed.. If you have any more questions or would like to see pictures of the adaptor I made let me know.

Sir...if you want to change out to an Edelbrock.....you really should replace the intake as well.
There are adapters to fit an Edelbrock to the Q-jet spread bore manifold....but I do not recommend them for several reasons. The biggest reason is that it will have a horrible mis-match from throttle plate to manifold.....it will never run like it should.
A performer EPS intake and 650 Edelbrock AVS would work perfect here. You will see some small gains in power as well.....
Let us know what you decide to do.....
Remember......professionally built Q-Jets are still available.....you may want to go this route...or have yours refurbished.

my car had a performer eps with a dual bolt pattern for both spread and square if I remember right and yet someone used a 1/2" spread to squarebore adapter to connect the manifold to the edelbrock squarebore carb... It was all replaced just before I bought the car... ended up replacing the engine and going with a hurricane or crosswinds manifold polished rpm clone and larger holly carb but the edelbrock combo seemed to work ok...

Have you considered rebuilding/having your carb blueprinted? Cheaper than an Edelbrock carb (I am assuming you are wanting to buy the Edelbrock that looks like the old Carter carbs)?
I don't know if he still does it but Lars rebuilt mine in 2000 and it is running like new 16 years later. That is quality!!!

My edelbrock carb still said it was a weber carb on its housing and the research I did at the time told me weber developed them before carter acquired them and later sold the molds to edelbrock who now has them cast in china and assembled in the stated (So they can say made in the usa on the box ) I did read this online So I cannot confirm its true even if it matters... I do wonder how well those original 60? year old molds are still holding up 3 owners later? The carb did perform pretty well on my car and they are the simplest carb I know of to service and keep working which is why they are so popular on weekend warrior classics that sit a lot. The avs thunder versions are supposed to address the performance limitations of the originals and would be what I would look into myself.

Thanks so much for the info and the images, very helpful! Looks like I am looking at an intake if I want to switch carbs. Lot to think about...rebuild my Quadrajet, switch intakes and look at an Edelbrock or Holly? I do like the stock air cleaner, so if I switch carbs and intake, I will be looking into your modification.

Yes! I have the Holley 4175 direct Qjet replacement 650 CFM vacuum secondary carb on my 78 L-82 since 1985...This carb has been great on my car and I am still using this same carb on my rebuilt L-82 355 with roller cam, AFR heads, and 10.2:1 compression. The Holley 4175 has been dead reliable over all these years, easy to tune (primary jets and secondary vacuum springs), same performance as the OEM Qjet, and simple to rebuild (rebuilt it in 2010). I always wonder why folks replace their Qjets with Edlelbrock, Demon, etc carbs when the Holley 4175 is a direct replacement for the OEM Qjet....BTW-The OEM aluminum L-82 intake is also still on the L-82 355 since the HP/Torque gains are minimal on stock to moderate performance engines below 6K rpm.....If I had a cast iron L-48 intake, I would definitely change to an aftermarket aluminum intake but no so much for the HP gain but more the weight savings

Imo I'd send the quad to Lars and have it rebuilt, but if your dead set on changing I'd go with the holley vaccum secondaries with the spread bore base plate, i don't really have a valid reason but prefer holley over edelbrock and know that a properly tuned Quadra jet will do as well.
