can any competent shop fix a left stub axle seal? 1982

I believe removing the axle yoke requires removing the differential cover to gain access to the clips holding the yokes in place. Since the differential cover is bolted to the differential cross member at the top and the leaf spring / strut rod brackets at the bottom, it is NOT a trivial job and will probably cost quite a bit to have a shop do the work.
Whether you do the job yourself or not, I would have both seals done.

on an `82 the diff bolts to the outside of the frame through the batwing, not in the center, still a big job

To make sure everyone is on the same page....is this the part you are referring to:
If it is.........it is a major repair even though the seals are inexpensive.
The seals (Pinion seal/left stub shaft seal/right stub shaft seal) should be replaced. The seals are about $30.00/the labor is several hundred dollars. You could buy a year-specific repair manual and do the repair with a helper in a weekend if you have mechanical ability to remove the differential. If the stub shaft can be pulled out of the differential case once the half-shaft is remove, the retaining rings inside the differential are damaged and also need to be replaced.
I am a Corvette rookie, but was able to replace the seals and retainers by myself (all weekend).

Slickfx3, the rear end will also have to be realigned after everything is bolted back up. As doorgunner said, it's a long job, but not a particularly difficult one if you want to try and save some money by doing it yourself.

I'm not sure if the original Post was about the Yoke or the Stub Axel ? Since the Grease out in the Axel Bearing is probably not going to make a mess and there fore no one is going to notice a bad Seal it probably is the Yoke.

Clean the area at a hi-pressure car wash/then check after driving 2-3 miles to see where the oil is seeping from.....no sense in removing the wrong part (the rear spindle shown below uses grease ONLY and fits in the Trailing Arm only))

If the reason you are replacing the Yoke is because there's a lot of play. you might find part of it still in the diff, and you need to flush the diff real good to get any left over pieces or the yoke. The fun part it installing the snap ring while the diff still in the car. Hence it is better to remove the diff completely. Easy access and you can inspect it and clean.
don't forget to replace the diff mount bushing.

Mason, if you want to know all that is involved in changing out these seals, you can check with the folks at Corvette Mike in Anaheim. They do this type of work pretty routinely. I won't guarantee their prices to be the best, but they are certainly capable and can fill you in on all that is involved and how long it should take. (714) 630-0700
