Default Question about dropping oil pan

I understand that I need to drop the steering to remove the oil pan on my 80. Question is do the wheels have to be off the ground? I would like to use my ramps if possible instead of jack stands.

No the wheels don't have to be off the ground.
Pull the draglink from the idler arm and the pitman arm and the linkage should drop enough. You may have to shift the wheels by hand to gain a little extra room.

Default Idler arm

I just changed out my rear main seal this past Sunday. You only have to drop the two bolts holding the idler arm to the chassis and the steering linkage will drop down enough to drop the pan. Jerry

I have done this twice. On an 80 and a 78 in the past. I did the same with no problems.

Letting the wheels fall free adds a lot of extra room. As posted, remove the two idler arm bolts and you'll have plenty of space.
