Default Will GM HEI distributor fit in a '74

I've looked under the hood. It's a SBC with factory points distributor.
Will an HEI distributor with coil on top of the cap fit there and clear the
firewall on the rear side and the hood on the top side. Also, it's a tach drive unit. I know it's far from original look, but that's not an issue for me right now on this car. There are some really good deals to be had on HEI units now......

Yes, but GM HEI is not tach drive and will not fit under the factory radio shielding. FWIW: Pertronix makes a conversion kit which will allow you to keep your stock distributor.

I would also check air cleaner clearance. You would need to run a new (heavy) wire to switched ign, and change plug wires.

Yes, it will fit, my buddy had one in his 74 but had to dent his aftermarket air cleaner to sit flat.

Pertronix could be cheaper. I believe LectricLimited also has a conversion kit.

a tach drive HEI will fit no problem, also no problem with hood clearance.
however original chrome shiedling will not, and you may have to modify your breather to fit.
you also will have to supply new power wire to the HEI. you cannot use the original coil resistance wire for power.
