Antifreeze?

Antifreeze?
Running aluminum heads, pump and radiator. I have always been uncertain if I should cool with conventional (green) antifreeze or dex-cool. Would like to hear your thoughts.

I can't confirm this from my own knowledge, but a auto parts guy once told me that Dex-Cool is good but it needs to changed regularly and that it becomes corrosive if it's not changed. Like I said, not sure if this is true, but maybe others can confirm/deny.
I personally use Zerex G0-5.

I've been running the universal 5-year coolant (Prestone) since it came out... late 90's???
I have aluminum heads, intake, water pump and radiator. Never any problems and the radiator looks like new inside (it's almost 20 years old). I change it every 5 years.

Thank you all for the input. I also have a Dewitts radiator. I think I'm going to drain and flush with clear water and go with the Zerek. Everything is 3k miles new and I don't want a corrosion issue.

I used Prestone & change it about every three to four years, I drive about 2 thousand miles in the four cars I own a year. They seem to be doing fine. My wife has a Lexus & they want ot change it every year when it goes in for service. Good Luck Gene

One thing to keep in mind about antifreeze, all types, is that the more you put in, the less efficient your cooling system becomes. Plain water would cool best, but that has obvious disadvantages. I use 25% concentration of antifreeze in my car. No cooling system problems .Depending on where your car is parked during the winter, you might consider this. Save a few bucks too.

Dex-Cool is designed for use with aluminum engine blocks. You don't need it. Use regular glycol antifreeze at a 50/50 mix with distilled water.

I also do not have any cooling problems, and I've got a 690 hp big block in my corvette with a 2 row radiator.

Engine compartment heat may be way too much for hood paint on a very hot day, IF you have uncoated headers and poor airflow through the engine compartment.
If the coolant is "boiling in the heads", then the pressure inside the cooling system had increased to the point that the pressure cap would be relieving itself. If it did not, there was no internal boiling.
My take is that your engine compartment just got to higher than 300*F (but not the coolant).

Thanks agin every one. I don't have a cooling problem and was running Presstone 50/50. I'll look at the Dewitts instructions and go with that. I was just concern with corrosion as every thing is new and want to avoid any problems with all the aluminum in my system.
