Default 1969 No Air Dash Support Rod Pictures

Hi-

Anyone have some pictures showing the dash support rods for a 69 conv without AC?

We have a car in our shop that we are doing a ZR-1 clone of... and someone has removed all the rods and supports from the dash. We are trying to make sure we have the correct rods but have nothing other than the AIM to go by and it's not very clear.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Ernie

Give these a shot-- 69 convertible, no air. Sorry they're not a little more clear, but I was figuring out where the new wire harness needed to run.

Perfect Tim

That is exactly what I needed to see. I'm missing the bracket on the driver side A pillar for sure, and it looks as if I'll have to fab up one of the rods I'm missing.

Great-- glad I could help.. FWIW- the rods from the A pillar to the left side of the column mount have serrated flat ends. I'm guessing so they can "lock" together..

Thanks again Tim... those pictures tell us exactly what we need to know.

We got lucky, the bracket we are missing on the left A pillar came with one of the rods we purchased used. However, they only sent us 2 rod and there appears to be four.... With what we have and what we got I think I can make this happen (I hope)...

We have another mess with this car that is going to be a huge challenge... it was rolled over and even though the goofs that painted the car borrowed my windshield frame jib, they didn't get the left pillar in the right place. When we put our jig in place the left pillar is 5/8" from being in the right place in one direction and 3/4" from being right in another... and even though we gave them the spacer rods for the jib, the header was down so low that a windshield would never fit in the opening..... This is going to be a challenge no doubt.

When was the car built? There was a change is the under dash bracing during the course of the 69 model year. The pictures Tim posted represents the early style of bracing which was a carry over from 1968. The 69 AIM in section 1 page A9 shows the later style.

I don't know exactly when they switched but my Dec. 68 built car had the older style shown in Tim's pictures.

Hi TAT,
Some very nice photos of the cowl braces!!
May I save them?
If I were to use them I'd credit them to you.
Thanks!

Alan- absolutely- Be sure to let anyone know that is NOT the correct routing for the wiring harness (LOL) that was an early attempt at getting it right.
I've been working on heavy airplanes too long- a little bit of rubbing on a harness keeps me awake at night.

Hi TAT,
I guess so.
It's one thing to see a little smoke from under the dash at 35mph… but quite another to see it at 35,000 feet!
Regards,
Alan

I'll have to check the build date... This car is a mess for sure.

I've got all the rods that match Tim's picture and your right the AIM is different than what Tim sent me. I'll have to check the date.

No kidding there Alan.. The blue 69 in my shop belongs to a retired Air Force pilot.. he can tell you about smoke at 35,000 feet.

SN on this car is 07934 so now I'm perplexed. Does anyone know when the change happened?

Your OK. My 69 was sn 10,000 something and it still had the early design braces.

Ernie, are you going to bend the passenger side rod to fit it back in. I know that VA says that you don't need it (cowl shake) but a friend of mine did it on a customer's convertible and it did further reduce cowl shake compared to other installs that he'd done.

I'm installing the passenger side rod just like Tim's picture. The rod I located seems to fit perfect. I'm a bit confused about your question on bending the rod though... did I miss something?

Sorry, just realized it was originally an a/c car that a previous owner removed the original unit and just totally messed everything up (cutting, welding ..) trying to install a 78 dash. It scarred me for life.
