Recheck the shifter alignment.

And clutch pedal adjustment too. Reverse is unsyncronized so if the shafts are spinning at all reverse would grind

Check the column lock cable.... mine was kinking and showing the same signs. Poor shifting on and out of reverse.

Could just be some crud between the levers. Might start by hitting the shifter levers with some WD40. I'm doing a frame off and the old grease between the shifter levers was like tar.

most likely the interlock cable is cruded up, preventing smooth shift into reverse.
usually someone disconnects column interlock at the column , because they did't like it.
(if you do Not have to shift into reverse to remove your key, yours has been dissconnected.)
But the cable is left dangling and neglected, still connected to the transmission.
it cruds up, it will not shift into reverse.

Hi,
You state " transmission is HARD TO GET OUT" of reverse. This means that obviously it goes into reverse OK but difficult to get out?

The most common cause in Muncie 4 speeds IS NOT linkage adjustment or cable issues. It's dampening springs under the reverse gear.

So rather than the "try this or try that approach", simply remove the linkage attached to the reverse shifter shaft and with a wrench on the shifter shaft see if the motion is fluid for the reverse to go in and out. If is it, then it is external to the transmission, if not, then it is internal.

Go to 3 minutes & 42 seconds into this video:
