Default LS1 and 4l60e into a 1980 Corvette C3 swap guide part list

I am in the process make the most up to date comprehensive LS1 + 4l60e swap guide for the C3

Those of us that want to convert our C3 want to do it right, and have pride in the conversion.

Like me you may have noticed Photobucket has destroyed alot of invaluable threads since they changed their T&C. We can no longer see pictures from most of the threads with previous information.

I am to work with the suppliers of new products and create a thread with details on each component and option for the entire swap. I have contacted a few suppliers that i have researched products i believe are of high quality and will work very well.

I have spent so many many hours trying to find answers on so many topics for LS1 swaps, so frustrating wasting so many time. Thankfully i have a friend that can help as he has finished his build.

I will be making separate threads when reviewing some of the products that deserve more than a picture and description. They will be a How To install Guide with pictures. This thread will contain options for each section that needs to be considered when doing a swap. I will also be doing a follow up once the items have been used for a time to share how durable they are.

Recommended Suppliers

* Based on communication, product quality and support i will list my good experiences when dealing with suppliers

www.lsxinnovations.com LSX innovations - Justin gives amazingly fast responses, very informative, and you can tell has passion for his products. It is rare that you find a company like this, it seems these days people dont have the integrity and customer service like they used to. Thankfully this place still does and I will be getting as many as the parts i can from here. I highly recommended you check out their site. They carry a big amount of items for an LS swap.
SHIFTWORKS - Herb was very good to get back to me and help with any enquiry i had. He was willing to help swap parts in the kit to make the swap as easy as possible for me.
Intellitronix - Derek has helped answer my enquiries on what i need to make his kit work with the LS1. A part was damaged in shipping and he was quick to offer a replacement. This is good to know you have support when things go wrong.
WS6Store - I dont even know who i chatted with but over MANY emails great advice was given for engine rebuild parts and dam good prices too. I will have to make another thread for LS1 and 4l60e Stregnthening suggestions and DIY... But for any LS1 engine parts this company is the place to go to.

Engine requirements

Engine mounts

Option 1: lsxinnovations $24.99
https://www.lsxinnovations.com/produ...llet-aluminum/
Notes: CNC machined so every single product is within .0005 thousands. Other products that are laser or waterjet will have greater variances and products may not fit 100% everytime.
They are also made in steel and non adjustable versions.

Option 2: brphotrods motor mounts, transmission cross member adapter, transmission mount $479
http://www.brphotrods.com/products/6...tte/index.html
Notes: Laser cut, not adjustable. I dont believe the trans mount will fit 80-82.
These mounts shift the engine towards the front of the car, will require alternator bracket. Works with their header set.

Options 3: ictbillet SBC to LS Engine Swap Bracket set $35
http://www.ictbillet.com/engine-swap...plate-ls1.html
Notes: CNC machined, adjustable. Dont have the cutout for the engine mount hump so may rub.

AC brackets

To determine what size offset you need depends on the depth of the crank pulley / harmonic balancer.

Short: 2 1/8” = Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V
Medium: 2 15/16” = Camaro and Firebird (1998-2002), GTO,
Long: 3 11/16” = Truck, SUV, 2010+ Camaro

Option 1: LSX innovations LS1 Sanden Corvette Spacing AC20 $249.99
https://www.lsxinnovations.com/produ...c-bracket-kit/
Notes: Made from Billet Aluminum. Doesnt rely on a weak oem tensioner but uses a strong manual belt tensioner $59.99 extra.
Comes with: Bracket, all mounting hardware, idler pulley.
Parts not included: Sanden 508/SD5 compressor (6 groove or more), Belt tensioner, 6 groove 101-1/8 inches belt

Option 2: Corvette LS1 Sanden A/C compressor bracket LSX AC10 $155
Notes: This is the budget version of the one piece AC20. The bracket is not one piece and therefore has more parts to put together like most kits. It is only for those who cannot afford the top of the line AC20 kit.
Comes with: Brackets, all mounting hardware, idler pulley.
Parts not included: Sanden 508/SD5 compressor (6 groove or more), Belt tensioner, 6 groove 101-1/8 inches belt

Option 3: brphotrods Sandeen AC Drive Brackets w/Comp $478
http://www.brphotrods.com/products/F...Acc/index.html
Notes: Includes compressor, brackets, idler, and hardware.

Option 4: Holley AC R4 compressor Bracket $145*
https://www.holley.com/products/acce...y/parts/20-133

Notes: *This bracket will need the short, medium or long accessory alignment bracket.
For corvette short size its part # 21-1 and a cost of $55.63.
They also suggest Idler pully part# 97-150 $38.82 and tensioner assembly part 97-151 $108.95.
Total cost: $348.40

Other AC bracket options

Dirty Dingo LS Sanden 508 A/C Bracket Assembly DD-LS-SANDEN-AC-CV $250
https://www.dirtydingo.com/shop/prod...oducts_id=1501
Notes: Includes new Gates idler pulley and Gates monster spring loaded belt tensioner.
Parts not included: Sanden 508/SD5 compressor.

Kwik Performance Corvette LSx Sandeen AC bracket kit K10143 $197
http://www.kwikperf.com/lsx_ac.html
Notes:
Includes: Idler pulley mount, Smooth pulley for use on the tensioner.
Parts not included: Sanden 508/SD5 compressor, LS main belt tensioner. (The pulley will be removed and used as the idler pulley.)

AC compressor

Option 1: My 1980 already had a R4 Compressor (Four Seasons 58231) so if you go with that then;
Notes: You will need to replace the clutch from V belt to 6 groove belt*

*AC clutch conversion
Option 1: If a R4 C3 compressor then the clutch needs to be converted to a 6 belt clutch to be compatible to the LS1 pulleys
Four Seasons A/C Compressor Clutch 47671 $76
https://www.autopartskart.com/sku/fs...FReSfgodTuIEsQ
Notes: If you already have a R4 you may think this is the way to go. But they fail often, leak when not used so even with my C3 already having a R4 conversion i have decided to go with a Sanden/4 Seasons.

Option 2: Sanden SD508 or its newer model SD5H14 (7 groove). There is then sub models where determine the type of clutch used.
SDH14 http://www.sanden.com.sg/opencms/ope...t.jsp?pid=1003
Page 3 shows the different models of clutches on the SDH14 https://www.sanden.com/objects/Sande...0Catalogue.pdf
6629 - fitting (cylinder head) type = FL
Fitting Type: Suction = 7/8-14UNF Discharge = 3/4-16UNF

Option 3: FOUR SEASONS 58589 $162
Pulley Groove Quantity 7
Compressor Type SD508
Clutch Pulley Diameter(in) 4.750
https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...89&jsn=1&jsn=1

Option 4: Proflow Pfeaccomp1bk Sanden 508 $DO NOT BUY PROFLOW / VPW. Bad quality product, worse customer support.
I also tried this local one in Australia... Do not make the same mistake. Was a very cheap copy, i wont even post a pic of it.

Pulley only
Also found a 8 groove pulley incase you find another SD508/5H14/5H16 compressor but wrong pulley
CM A/C 132mm Sanden Pulley for 8 Groove Compressor - CM133014 QR $55

4l60/65e Transmission requirements

Shifter conversion

Option 1: shiftworks SC2403 $97.225
http://www.shiftworks.com/corvette-68-81.htm
Notes: If you have a 4l60e with a short range select shaft you dont need anything extra. If you have a long range select shaft OR a Neutral Safety Switch on the outside (see pic below) you will need to contact Herb at Shiftworks to swap the part to the 845-4le-c kit or buy it if your not sure.

845-4le-c Long Shaft Kit $18.50
http://www.shiftworks.com/4lx.htm

Short Shaft

Long Shaft

Neutral Safety Switch

Electronic to Manual Speedo conversion

Option 1: Intellitronix speedo cluster dash with electronic speedo (mph and kph) and taco DP2002W $400
https://www.intellitronix.com/produc...al-gauge-panel
Notes: I brought this kit as it has everything. Instant digital speed and taco. Plus with a new electronic engine the ability to monitor water temp, fuel pressure, oil temp and pressure and volts.

Here is the INSTALL Guide
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...h-install.html

You can just purchase the Speedo and Taco rather than the entire package. DP2002 $280
But i suggest for the extra $120 you get both.

Option 2: Abbott Cable-X-3012 $340
http://www.abbott-tach.com/orderpage.htm
Notes: I have seen this work in person. I am not impressed.
It is laggy and the needle bounces. I would look at other options.

Option 3: Change the tailshaft with one that can fit a mechanical gear to run the stock taco and speed.
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...3-ls-swap.html

Trans Mount Options

Option 1: BRPHot rods trans mount kit (part of the engine mount kit) $479
On some later model corvettes (79-82) there were two different factory bolt in transmission x-members. This kit is designed to be used with the one for the turbo 400 transmission.
You will need to swap it out if you have the one for the 4-speed transmission.
http://www.brphotrods.com/products/6...tte/index.html

Option 2: Energy Suspension Trans Mount. Model 31108G $27 + Cross member modification.
The 1980 Transmember can be removed and the Energy suspension mount as shown also in BRPHot rods kit can be used.
I cut off the lip of the stock 1980, shortened it and had it welded back on.
Notes: Make sure the drive shaft is offset, its not dead center with the diff. I made that mistake and had to have the mount re welded.

If setting the engine further back 1" or so back. Here is what you need to take into consideration.

1. a. You need to modify the trans cross member bracket. The 1980 removable auto one you can cut the stock mount off, cut the end off (shorten it) and re weld it back on.

1. b. You also need to cut the hand brake bracket off and make another one as the cable fouls on the drive shaft uni.

2. You need to use a flexible dipstick

3. You need to shorten the drive shaft

4. You dont need to relocate the alternator up high

5. You still need to block off the heater hoses from the water pump

6. You will need 45 degree and 60 degree fittings to run the return and supply lines for the trans cooler so you clear the body tunnel

Oil Pan Options

Oil Pan for C3 Corvette LS1 swap - I found a pan that works for $130 !!! Read below to find out.

Option 1: 1998 - 2002 F-Body Camaro/Firebird LS1 Oil Pan

Genuine GM #12628771 and #12558762 $250 (I believe the GM pan has a provision for dipstick, not 100% sure)
Dorman 264-331 LS1 Reproduction Oil Pan $200 (no dipstick hole, must use the block)
SKP - SK264331 LS1 Reproduction Oil Pan $130 !!! This is what i got, see pics in my build thread (no dipstick hole, must use the block)

Notes: - Neither come with Windage Tray, Pickup, Oil Dipstick

Accessories requires for 1998 - 2002 F-Body Camaro/Firebird Pans

Oil Filter: K&N PS-1017-4 (M22x1.5 thread) NOT (13/16 x16) which is the old version and no longer used unless you pick up a old 2nd hand GM pan.
Oil pump pickup with o-ring: 12558251 $38 on ebay free shipping from partscenterplus - if new o-ring is needed #12557752 $7
Windage Tray aka Wind deflector: 12558253 $20 on ebay free shipping from partscenterplus
Dipstick: 12551581 $15 on ebay free shipping from partscenterplus

Ones to avoid to clearance or unknown fitment

Corvette 2005-2013 LS2 #12581810 $300+
Notes: May require modification, its 5" depth with clear the road but i cant find info if anyone has used it on a LS1 and C3..

Chevrolet GM Performance Muscle Car Oil Pan #12624621 $150 and the kit #19212593 $206

This is 95% complete. Thanks to Mystic petes photos i have been able to look up part numbers and make a fuel system for LS1 EFI.
I have not seen any other online for the corvette C3.

LS1 Corvette C3 Fuel System
DIY C3 Fuel EFI System

Fuel System

Option 1: Use the stock fuel system and upgrade the pump and a C5 Corvette Fuel Filter/Regulator.

Fuel Rail
Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. female push on EFI fitting RUS-644123 $17
Summit Twist Barb 90 degree hose end 6 AN SUM-260687B $9.97

Engine bay hard line
Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. female push on EFI fitting RUS-644123 $17
Summit Twist Barb 90 degree hose end 6 AN SUM-260687B $9.97

Fuel tank pump assembly external
Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. female push on EFI fitting RUS-644123 $17 - This may not work so take a look at Earl's Performance Tube Adapter Fittings AT165006ERL $11. It converts a metal tube with 37 degree flair (most have 45 degrees) to a AN fitting.
No flaring needed.

Summit Twist Barb straight hose end 6 AN SUM-260686B $9.97

Fuel tank pump assembly internal
Fuel Pump - Walbro 255lph in-tank pump and filter GSS342 $57
The metal pipe on the stock fuel pump assembly needs to be cut and a special fitting used.
Dorman Fuel Line Connectors RNB-800-120 $8
This then has a flared end that you can use a small hose to then join to the pump.

Rear fuel hard line
Summit Twist Barb straight hose end 6 AN SUM-260686B $9.97
Summit Twist Barb 90 degree hose end 6 AN SUM-260687B $9.97

Filter / Regulator

99-2004 C5 Corvette Fuel Filter/Regulator & Fittings 58 PSI $70 comes with the 3 fittings below
Russel 6 AN to 5/16 in. female push on EFI fitting Russell 644113
Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. female push on EFI fitting RUS-644123
Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. male push on EFI fitting RUS- 640930
You will also need to connect the filter to the hardline and pump assembly
Summit Twist Barb straight hose end 6 AN SUM-260686B $9.97
Summit Twist Barb 120 degree end 6 AN SUM-260688B $11.97

Fuel hose
Buy 3/8” fuel hose to be used between
Fuel rail and engine fuel hard line
Fuel assembly output and filter/regulator
Filter/regular to rear fuel hard line
Submersible hose will be needed for the internal return for in tank.

Inline Fuel filter
Russell Competition Fuel Filter -6 AN 6AN 40 micron RUS-650133 $30
2x Summit Twist Barb straight hose end 6 AN SUM-260690B $3.97

Total $280

Option 2: Use a 1999-2002 Camaro fuel assembly with fuel basket

Fuel Pump Assembly
1998-2002 Camaro DELPHI FG0154 $150 or $115 for cheaper brands
Notes: 58 PSI, 40-250 ohm (fuel level sender will not work with stock fuel gauge which uses 0-90 ohm)

Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. female push on EFI fitting RUS-644123 $17
Russel 6 AN to 5/16 in. female push on EFI fitting Russell 644113 $17
5x Summit Twist Barb straight hose end 6 AN SUM-260690B $3.97
1x Summit Racing® Y-Fittings SUM-220107B $18

This from Vetteworks can be used or a Y fitting can be used instead

Fuel hose
Buy 3/8” fuel hose to be used between
Fuel rail and engine fuel hard line
Fuel assembly output to Y fitting
Filter/regular to rear fuel hard line

Engine bay hard line
Russel 6 AN to 3/8 in. female push on EFI fitting RUS-644123 $17
Summit Twist Barb 90 degree hose end 6 AN SUM-260687B $9.97

Inline Fuel filter
Russell Competition Fuel Filter -6 AN 6AN 40 micron RUS-650133 $30
2x Summit Twist Barb straight hose end 6 AN SUM-260690B $3.97

Total $331

Exhaust Options

Ideally the best for flow is a long tube header / extractor 4 to 1 style with Primaries of 44mm (1 3/4) to 3" collector
Second best would be a mid length with same dimensions
Then the shorty manifolds using a 4 to 1.
The log style manifold where they all merge into one 'log' is the most restrictive and in some cases esp with a cam, will be 15rwkw less.

Option 1: MuscleRods Ceramic Coated Headers MR45926 - 1 ¾” ceramic coated long tube headers $749
Notes: They all include gaskets, bolts, reducers, and O2 sensor bungs
O2 bungs are provided but not installed in the collector.
Passenger side header maintains excellent clearance from the idler arm.
Confirmed to work with F-body pan, stock and borgeson steering box.
Works with the matching BRPHot rods mounts which sit the engine forward.
Will work the LSX Innovation engine mounts and having the engine sat further back towards the firewall.
Uses Extended collectors which have been shown to make addition gains.
Comes in sizes 1 ¾” , 1 7/8”, 2”. Also stepped, 1 ¾” stepped to 1 7/8” and 1 7/8” stepped to 2".
http://www.brphotrods.com/products/6...tte/index.html

Option 2: 68-82 Corvette C3 LS swap headers SFC3X $NO LONGER MADE
http://www.melrosecorvette.com/68-82...-swap-headers/
Notes: SmoothFlow long tubes with 1-3/4" and 1 7/8" primaries into a 3" slip fit collector. Stout 3/8" CNC cut flanges.
O2 bungs are located in the collector.
Passenger side header maintains excellent clearance from the idler arm.
Will not work with the Corvette batwing oil pan and requires F-body pan

Option 3: Speed Engineering LS Swap Camaro Firebird Headers 1982-92 $289 inc shipping !!!
1 7/8" Primaries, 3" Collectors - Part # 25-1035 from ebay seller Speed-Engineering

Notes: These have been confirmed to fit if
*you no longer have your stock steering box and went with a rack and pinion
*you have a F-Body Pan or Batwing oil pan
*Steeroids power rack
* WILL NOT WORK with stock steering box or Borgeson box
* Runs 5-10mm from the oil adapter plate if you plan to run one.
* O2 sensors angle towards the transmission but still clear

If you use the Steeroids rack these are the known headers that fit
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...directory.html

Electronics

Cruise Control

For a short time i thought about getting a 2006 drive by wire electronic TB to make cruise easier.
That was not the case.

Drive by wire requirements
0411 PCM that can be programmed for DBW & DBC or the PCM that came with engine and TB
Loom with DBW plugs for TB
DBW TB
TAC or Cruise control module
DBW accelerator pedal
Brake switch
Clutch switch if you manual
Cruise control stalk

* I could not figure out the exact part numbers, which years could be interchanged etc. It was also a few hundred dollars of the parts i saw..

Drive by cable requirements
0411 PCM that can be programmed for DBW & DBC or the PCM that came with engine and TB
Loom with DBC plugs for TB
DBC TB
Cruise control module
Brake switch
Clutch switch if you manual
Cruise control stalk

* There are also way to many oem setups and hard to get all the parts so i think going aftermarket is the best way.

So here are the parts for aftermarket

Drive By Cable - I will focus on DBC for now, not many people will have DBW

Cruise Control Unit: Rostra Cruise Control Kits 250-1223 $200
Notes: Electric servo not vacuum

Cruise control stalk: - Rostra 250-3032 $35
Notes: it can slip over your existing stalk but there are 2 other options

Speed Sensor

Two options
Rostra 250-4165 Vehicle Speed Sensor 2-Wire Magnetic $35

Rostra 250-4160 Vehicle Speed Sensors Analog $67
Notes: Inline with the speedometer cable at the transmission (i will have to check but 4l60e may not work with this)

Clutch switch: Rosta 250-4206 $41
Brake switch: Rostra 250-2707 $42

MISC - THIS PAGE TO BE SORTED OUT....

Need the correct temp sender
Can the center dash gauges all work with the LS1 ?

Pics from a friend who has done the conversion

PS pump pulley clearance

Water pump clearance ?

This setup using using both AC and PS/ATN brackets

The engine sits too far forward thus the PS / ATN needing to be relocated

Not sure which brackets these are

Holley 302-1 is needed if the Drive shaft is not cut so Trans can sit back.

this is where the trans sits on the stock cross member

Stock LS1 alternator fouling when stock drive shaft is used.

Stock 1980 radiator can be used with custom fan shroud

Hey Nathan, so first off that's a great site you found there brphotrods!

a) I don't think their engine mount kit will move the engine back from stock position tho. the Hooker 12611 def. do as I had a set, sorry sold them and may be the better fit, they are the ones in the later photo bolted on the engine. Try and find others that have already done the conversion and see what mounts they used and if they got the drive shaft shortened?
b) The photo of the pan fitted to the engine is the first pan I tried the 302-2 which was too deep.
c) would def go with moving the engine further back, save $$$$$ on moving the alternator and buying a new PS Pump and brackets
d) I'd also still go for using the existing A/C pump unless your very rich. if you really wanted to change to the other type your LS1 A/C pump will do the job, just need the right mounting bracket. but really why would you fix something that aint broke?
e) The instruction I read in the BRP blurp didn't say anything about relocating the TXM cross member which leads me to think that you just cut the existing one off and weld theirs on?
f) for the fuel pump, I would def. get the new style Hydromat adaptors that Holley now sell https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/hydramat/ as I had fuel starvation at the track last month on the corners and I still showed half a tank of fuel.
g) Fuel line a reg kit is def DIY ($400!! + Shipping!!) the Corvette filter/return is like $25.00USD the pipework and fittings take up a lot of the cost, I found a local place that was pretty good on price, and ebay of course fro fitting and fuel tube.
H) All the gauges will work with the right senders. Order a stock water temp sender and I'll get it cut down and threaded for you.

Some parts I used from as many OZ sellers as possible:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/99-04-New...b31cc05&_uhb=1 my covers
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Windscree...item4405037536 Windscreen washed kit I used
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/24-VS-VT-...item25d35cc484 the leads on the loom were too short to reach the 02 sensors
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CABLE-X-E...item25d08b0c69 Cable-X cheaper than ordering from the USA, make sure you get the clip on cable for GM
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/16-INCH-2...-/111984980682 or similar
http://stores.ebay.com.au/DIRT-DEVIL...p2047675.l2563 Good store for cheap PTFE braided fuel pipe and fittings
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EXHAUST-O...cAAOSw0hlZN2Y~ for 02 Sensor mounts
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-52mm-DI...item1e8f954563 got this for the oil pressure sender unit and chucked the guage.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BILLET-RA...item2c72cea2d0 One of these or similar size filter 10 micron
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Universal...item1ebe803aec One of these OBD connectors

An option for driving the stock speedo would be the Speedhut GPS or VSS cable drive, no cheaper though: http://www.speedhut.com/ecommerce/pr...peed-Converter

So your using a commodore LS1 ? I got these plates off ebay for around $30 . you can see the plate is non adjustable and the bottom bolt for the chevy rubber mount goes into the engine block . I can get the alternator out without too much drama.

I used the Camaro oil pan and bought as a kit with dipstick and windage tray . It fitted ok with the standard TYPE steering (mines rhd) and with the rack,n,pinion set I later put on.

I got the tail shaft cut down but that was cheaper than buying an new set of accessories .

I did get a smaller aircon compressor down there , but just no room to get the lines on . I went the same as your option 1 from brc hotrods.

Had a lot of "adjusting" to get the new belt to not squeak, but after a couple of hours adjusting the re-used belt tensioner bracket face with a file its fine . you can also see the polished brass fittings for the new heater outlet I welded into a new pump (I ended up getting rid of most of them )

As for the rear transmission mount and cross-member , you could do what I did ,don't worry about it now ,just put the engine/trans in and you will see what you need to do . I ended up bending a piece of plate to fit between box mount and cross-member

I bought a new "matched pair " of temp sender gauge and sender from zip and just put the sender in the top radiator hose, I had my doubts but have checked it with a ir heat gun thingy and its close enough for me .

as for fuel lines , I tried some VT commodore ute lines and they fit pretty well ,so I got the factory in line filter connections just in behind the gearbox cross-member.

edit: photobucket wont let me get any more pics out

Is this your latest job or was this from a previous swap?

I used ARH for headers. Only clearance issue was the idler arm. Had to grind off the top of the arm where it bolts to the frame.

this is how I ran the original oil pressure gauge ,

you can see the standard cast iron LS3 exhaust manifolds fit well and clear everything

this is the vetteworks pump unit I put in a NEW 69 tank (because it had a nice flat area to cut without blowing myself up !) it works well but I think there are better ideas out there now days
