Cleaning up old rusty brake rotors
My rear brake rotors are ugly.
They measure out ok and appear usable, but how do I clean them up
I am specifically thinking about the surface rust in the vents
And yes one has a broken lug.
Or should I just drill them out and replace the rotors?
Thanks

You can press out the broken stud from the outer axles
Are the outers rusted to the rotors? Why are the outers removedfrom the trailing arms? You can media blast and paint the non pad contact areas.
But rotors are so cheap, why muck with them

Hi gw,
I wanted to use my original rear rotors so stripped the rust off every thing I could reach using a wire wheel on a bench grinder.
I used paste rust remover in all the channels. (Easy but time consuming.)
I sprayed the rotors with Cast Blast except for the braking surfaces. I use Pre Lube 6 on those areas.
Regards,
Alan

measure rotor thickness First if ok, then small blast cabinet to clean up rotor vents,
paint with high temperature paint, then do a cleanup pass on the rotor surface.

I do a lot of woodworking and a set of rotors makes a very handy set of weights to hold down wood for gluing pieces together, hand sawing short chunks of wood, etc. And they stack rather nicely so they don't take up much room. You would of course want to pound out the lugs and get rid of the rust.
I painted up my new slotted rotors with some POR 15.

You have another problem to consider - how are you planning to reinstall your clean rotors/spindle? You will likely ruin your outer bearing in the glass beading cabinet AND there is no way to get the outer seal back in the housing with the rotor on. My advice is drill out the rivets, buy new rotors (they are dirt cheap) and put it all back together. Did you mark with spindle is left & right?
