I found the orientation of this particular piece. It's the clip on the top right. Attaches to the inside of the tilt lever cover. Whew. Making progress.

I have always been in awe of the small stuff that just seems to "fall out" of a steering column so you have to hunt around to figure out where it goes and what it does.

I've got a great picture that someone here sent me that shows how it fits, but I can't post it. PM yer email to me and I'll send it to you.

Default Finally Back At It Today

Shipping delays for the column bearings set this project back about two weeks.
I couldn't stomach the >$70 price tag per bearing that the stealership
wanted. But I did want the GM bearings.
I ordered online from a GM dealer that sells at wholesale prices. Two
bearings at <$75 total online sounded great. Little did I know that they
ordered them from GM in order to sell them to me.

The bottom line is my package got delayed and left me hanging.

OK MOVING ON...

Default Today's Progress

I've been gun shy about putting this column back together properly. I installed those coveted GM shaft bearings and proceeded carefully. I went as far as getting the turn signal switch installed after I took these photos. So far it hasn't been as bad as I expected. Another set of hands would have come in handy at times.

Thanks.. After 15+ years working in dealers I've had so many columns apart it's not really necessary. Been out of dealers for close to 30 years now. but some stuff just never leaves. Thanks again!

Default Slow Going

Today I started putting the upper column together.

I adjusted the dimmer switch because the rod had fallen out of the switch. Put the lock plate back on and secured with the lock clip. Worked my way up the column stopping at the steering hub.

I have my speedo/tach cluster out as I had my speedo recalibrated and added a new gauge. I'm putting the cluster back in before the steering wheel goes on.

Then I'll pull my driver's seat and crawl under that darn dash to button everything up.

Change all the lamps first. I forgot, now I have to pull it again.
I will lube the cruise to speedo cable this time as well.

I changed all bulbs to LED some time back. I definitely need to lube that cable though.

Just a tad on the servo end. You don't want it in the head.

Today I got my dash cluster back in. Took the driver seat out in order to get under the dash. Tied up some loose wiring around the fuse box while I could. Assembled lower dash cover and ac duct.

Tomorrow's plan is to get the seat and steering wheel back in. That should finish the column rebuild.

For now.

I have given up saying "That's the last time for that."

I have had this car so long, I am replacing things now I already replaced years ago.

The good thing is it gets easier the second time around.

It's the last 2 bolts all the way down Gene. You have to disassemble the tilt all the way down to the last 2 bolts, loctite them and torque, then build the whole thing back up. PITA.
Jim Shea mentions that in his papers.

Checked the horn - NOTHING

Check the harmonica- some of them can be flipped and plugged in backwards. Or not fully seated. Make sure you have a good ground thru the column too- that's where the horn grounds.

The car starts and runs fine. Wouldn't that indicate that the harmonica is in the proper location? I think it's in the assembly of the switch or something done wrong when I reassembled the column.

The harmonica connector is for the turn signals, hazards, and the horn only. The ignition switch harness plugs into the ignition switch.
