Hurst Shifter adjustment
Hi Guys
I have a 1972 with the 4 speed. It has a hurst shifter. The local shop put a new clutch in it and made some adjustments to the shifter 18 months ago and it was a lot tighter and shorter throws than when I bought the car a couple years ago.
It seems the 3rd gear has gotten out of adjustment and hits the shifter plate when shifting into third. I would like to do this myself because I'm on a tight budget this month with 3 kids and a wife.
Anyone have any idea how to adjust these shifters/rod linkage. Is it something I do from inside the cockpit or from under the car? There are rods that cause the adjustments correct...
Thanks Dave

I believe the Hurst came with an adjustment tool which was inserted into a hole in the shifter bracket and you adjusted each linkage. Not positive on this but maybe someone else can chime in here.

You get all the shifter arms lined up where you can insert a dowel about 1/8 inch diameter through all of them. This sets up the neutral gate and you adjust the rods so the transmission arms are all the way locked in for reverse, 1-3, and 2-4.

IIRC a 1/4 drill bit is the correct size for the neutral gate adjustment. The instructions for adjustment should be on line somewhere. It's pretty simple- in neutral, slip the tool (drill bit) thru the shifter body and the adjust the rods so the slip easily into the arms.

just check your linkage for looseness, dont adjust anything yet. Does your car still shift like it did, short throws, definitely in gear, etc?
You can loosen the center console plate and check under the boots to see if the shift lever itself has moved or loosened up. I just replaced my lever and there is a bit of adjustment under there

yep check the linkage is bolted on tight and handle first. IIRC there is a plate bolted to the trans, and linkage body bolted to the plate. Also there are bushings in the linkage arms-examine for wear
