Default For the 700r4 converts, a question

How close was the side of the case to the floor under the passenger seat?

There is a littleish (big) bump out of the side of the trans I was looking at and figured it would hit the floor.

Are all 700R4 cases the same?
RWD V6 car?
RWD V8 car?
6 or 8 RWD pickup?
4x4 pickup?

Figured the RWD v8 car (Monte, Caprice or F car) might be the ticket, but hard to locate in my neck of the woods. Seems to picked over. But truck trans seem to be more plentiful.

Do yourself a favor a research whoever you are planning to take the tranny to, lots of people say they know what they are doing but dont. If you cant find some just buy it new from a place like bowtie overdrives and follow their instructions to the letter.

The 700-R4 cases are all the same.

You might be thinking of the 80's G-body cars with the 200-4R transmission.

I installed a 700R4 in my 80 Vette without much trouble at all. I bought a BTO crossmember, and had my driveshaft shortened by a local company beforehand. It went in easy and everything fit fine. I rebent the original oil lines and they fit fine.

I also bought a shifter conversion kit from Shiftworks.

Mine was a 4L60e swap but using the old 2WD 700r4-style case and it was tight, particularly at the transmission fluid lines, but fit without hitting.

I used the BTO cross-member. The shop doing the swap did NOT properly shim the transmission and it caused the fan to hit the fan shroud when I'd brake, then after shimming it correctly the drive shaft yoke hit the tunnel on hard accelerations on left-hand turns and just had to be realigned slightly.

I also bought the shifter conversion kit from Shiftworks to make it look like it came with 4 gears from the interior. But don't forget that you need to move the safety switch to the right place- my crappy shop put it on the wrong electrical post- the car would let you start it in drive and try to lurch forward...

I requested that the drive shaft be sent to a specialty shop so it could be, cut, welded and balanced and I'm pretty sure the shop just tried to do it themselves without balancing it and I get vibration now..... UGH!

This is exactly how I did mine. The tranny was custom made locally by a friend that fixes BTO crap. He says they use junk parts.

I put the 700r4 from a 92 truck on mine. (Based on number on trans case, ran it through a decoder to determine original application.)
i tried to use origunal cross memeber with caprice tail housing. The trans fit, but i'm using out the back 2 1/2 inch exhaust, and the bends would have put exhaust too close to case. I bought bto cross member and switched back to regular tail housing.

tunnel had no issues. But i loosend motor mounts and set tail piece on cross member first, THEN tightened motor mounts. The trans and drive shaft favor the passenger side. My tunnel was alreedy tight due to DEI heat shield. (I think its called Boom Mat?)

i did not have to make any trans tunnel mods.

Installing the 700-R4 into an auto trans car should be no problem. At least, I had no problems. Installing it in a manual-built car is an unknown, AFAIC. The auto cars had a bump-out built into the right side of the tunnel. If that were not there, IDK.

I converted mine to 700r4 about 9 yrs ago..its snug but does not hit anything.. I recommend attaching cooling lines BEFORE lifting all the way in..I had a new double strength Driveshaft made for it beforehand , install is fairly easy with a Lift.. not so much on Jack stands .. Recommend a Shifter conversion kit from ShiftWorks.com.. and get a good TV cable set-up for your carb

Thanks for the input people. Much appreciated.
Now it's time to start gathering parts.

2wd trucks are plentiful around my parts, so sourcing one shouldn't be an issue.

If got a WTB ad for the cross member already posted. The shift works kit etc wouldn't be too hard to source.

There are different length tailshafts which can fit 700-R4 trans. You need to measure the length of your present transmission to be sure in getting one that will fit without difficulty. You will have to determine if the unit you get will need to have your driveshaft modified or not.

The only issue I had was the yoke rubbed the passenger side of the tunnel. I had to notch it for clearance.

i had trouble fitting mine in as well, after much head scratching, and beers,
turned out the cross member was bet upwards and was causing the case to hit the side of the tunnel.

here's my post on my install

With the auto vehicle, you have some 'adjustment' latitude for drivetrain alignment via the motor mounts, trans mount, and cross-member attachments. The driveshaft should be fairly well centered if components are in good condition and the frame has not been bent.

I know that I did not have any problems fitting the 700-R4 into my '71 [auto] coupe. The space envelope for the 700-R4 is very similar to the 400 and 350 (modest length differences).

My '72 vert was a m Muncie 4 speed car, and most definitely I had to cut the tunnel on pass side, and pry it apart/wider, I even cut a hole on the forward end to get at the trans lines a lot easier, sealed it with a piece of aluminum and RTV/screws hold it fine...

I just installed my Mad Dog 700r4 but have not driven yet. I used a '82 crossmember but did not realize there was a bracket that was supposed to be used as well. I made a (straight plate) bracket and mounted it on top of the crossmember (too high). Then someone posted a picture of the bracket so I moved my flat plate to the bottom (too low). Now I have 2 large washers as spacers between the trans mount and my bracket. I have good spacing now and after test driving awhile I will make a spacer plate and get rid of the washers.

Get the latest model year you can fine. That product improvement thing. New trans, more factory upgrades, less cost later.

Yes it is close, when I did the 75 TH 400 to 700R4 the yoke was very tight to the passenger side of the tunnel but it does work no issues.
