What is this thing? (intake related)
I have noticed some little black specs all over my carb and intake manifold. While taking the breather off I noticed this screen thing with a trillion of them in it... with a hole. It sits just inside the air filter. I took it off (was glued down). What is it? I'm guessing maybe it's another part of the smog system? Do I need it? The air filter fits fine without it.

Carefully hang it on the wall (of the Smithsonian).

My question is...

That, my son, is an **** ring. They are known to fall out of your behind after you realize how much mony that car is costing you. You only have 7 to begin with so be very careful!
I'll show myself out now!

Thanks a lot for posting that tehjrow
You just solved a mystery for me. I had always wondered why there was some blue adhesive/sealant residue in my dual snorkel air cleaner box inside the circle of the air filter on my '81. Now I know.
I guess I must have had one of these devices in my car once upon a time too. Whatever it was is long gone, but I can only assume that they came from the factory this way.

I believe its filled with some type of flame retardant. Kept a backfire through the carb from getting out of hand; Flame Arrestor. More common on boat engines for obvious reasons.
