Default 1971 Steering Column - replace for tilt/tele

Other than buying a good replacement tilt/tele column, What work is involved in replacing the steering column?

My car is a restomod so not concerned with originality. I have a rack and pinion setup, rag joint and steering box are long gone. Just not sure how much work this is and what would be involved in using a column from a different/newer year corvette...

If the stock non tilt column is in it now, its a straight forward plug and play, you just have to do a 180 turn on the wiring to the ignition switch.

What is wrong with the current column? The columns will interchange from 1969-1975.... But what are you trying to fix? There is a ton of column experience on this forum that could possibly help you repair what the issue is...

IMHO,

i want tilt/tele. The bottom of the steering wheel now is too close to the top of the seat. Makes getting in and out tougher than it should be. Nothing wrong with the current column other than it is non tilt.

Then you can go with 1969-1975 as far as a replacement tilt column. You could go with a 1977-1982 column but this would cause issues with the turn signal and the wiper issue.

Flaming river makes a neat replacement column... the only issue is the tilt/tele column is not as nice as the tilt only... The reason is the tilt/tele column from them pushes the steering wheel too close to the driver.. While the tilt only column they make seems to work better.

IMHO,

Willcox
