Default 77 L82 4 Speed Engine Question

To the C3 Gurus.....Just picked up a (what I think) is a very original 77, non-air L82 4 Speed. Vin is correct for an L82. 76,000 miles
Everything's there....smog pump present and working, all lights work, wipers work etc. Ignition shielding all there. Chrome **** shifter.
Original radio.
My issue is that there's no numbers on the pad on the engine. It was sold as an L82, and from everything I can see, it looks right.
The block casting number is correct for a 77 - 79 350 2 or 4 bolt main. I can see guide plates for the pushrods through the oil hole.
Aluminium valve covers.
Car is black with buckskin interior. Can see all the body seams.....Interior good. Needs door panels and carpet...Seats decent. Steering wheel worn.
Of course, it needs some work....Heater core (Guy gave me a new one with the car) Radiator support is holy.....rear body mount cups are rotted
Needs front calipers....(Hardly any brakes...). Drove it onto the trailer, then into the garage..
What do you all think ? Maybe rebuilt at some point ??
Any and all opinions welcome.

Regards,
John

No reason not to post pictures of a car you own, right?

If the VIN checks out, great! Perhaps the engine is original, but was decked during a rebuild. Stick a borescope in the oil drain and look for 4-bolt mains. There are other differences that can be checked. If there is a VIN derivative on the 4-speed, that is another sign that the drivetrain is original.

But right now, you have a 77 4-speed with an unidentified, possibly NOM, engine. Fix it up, and drive the hell out of it!

And please post some pics!

An "X" in the VIN will tell you it was born as an L-82.

Look for the build sheet . It can be on top of gas tank as my 77 L-82 4 speed cars was. Be care full when removing for they fall apart as you handle them from years of road use. Now as far as non stamping not good, but on the motor under the car on or near bell housing a reference point that is written and i beleive stamped HO . This would tell you it was a L-82. Also check on drivers side of car on the carburetor the carb number , should be 17057211.Also if you can rebuild it do not toss it, there are many shops thet keep your car all Chevrolet.

From 1969-1980 the L82 used a larger Harmonic Balancer.
I also think it was externally balanced where the smaller L48 was internally balanced.
L82 8" GM #6272224 Actual Diameter 7.75"
L48 7" GM #6272221 Actual Diameter 6.75"

What is the casting date. Is it close to your buld date on the trim tag? block could be from another year.

All,

Thanks for the input..........The casting # on the top back left of the block is 14016379.
I've got it jacked up with the fronts off the ground. Both front calipers are blown.
Parts ordered. The fun begins.................

regards,
John

Looks like a nice car to start with.....
14016379 comes back as 77-79 2 or 4 bolt......
Guideplates mean the heads are legit.....
No numbers on the front means they were probably decked off during a rebuild.......
Don't worry about it.....get it running and enjoy it.....

at the front of all sbc: With exception of OE sbc 400; regardless of diameter all sbc dampers are Neutral.

at the rear of 55 to ~ 86/87 sbc: With the exception of OE sbc 400, all OE flexplate/flywheel are Neutral.

Beginning about 86/87 sbc: GM switched both block & crank design from old 2-piece rear main seal to newest (& current) block & crank 1-piece rear main seal design.

All OE sbc 1-piece RMS motors' cranks also have a smaller bolt circle at rear and require a different flexplate/flywheel; all OE sbc 1-piece RMS flexplate/flywheel have an external balance weight near outer diameter. 1-piece RMS motors typically referred to as external balance; but because the front damper is Neutral, the motor may be (more correctly) considered as having a "hybrid" balance.
