Compressor Fan Belt - Hitting Radiator Hose
1975 Coupe - Vintage Air Install
Problem with the compressor belt hitting the lower radiator hose at high RPM. Service bulletin here:
http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/...rence-721.html
Question 1:
Does anyone have or can anyone make / supply me with an AC belt guide (Part number 45895) or point me to where I can find it?
OR.......
The stock belt (that I'm using) is 58"... I think if I go to a 57" belt, that may give me the clearance I need so the belt misses the hose.
I don't think it will raise the compressor up too high so it hits the hood. But, IDK.
Question 2:
Anyone out there that did a Vintage Air conversion on a C3 and if so, what size belt did you use?
Thanks,
Len

From the looks of it it would be very easy to make using some 1/8" steel and a vice to bend it.

I have made my own shields for the lower radiator hose and used the rear upper control arm stud and another nut to hold it on. And it looks just like what GM had offered.

My a/c belt looked like it "might" touch when I installed a/c.....so I wrapped a couple of large tye-wraps around the radiator hose in case it touched. Something you can do while you locate a shield.
I really don't think that it touches (it's been years), but I left the tye-wraps there just for peace of mind.

When I replaced the lower radiator hose on my 73 L82, I had the same problem. When I replaced the hose later, I rotated and pushed the hose slightly to give me more clearance. Also made sure the belt was tight and not flopping. Picture of old hose with belt cut:

OK, so a 57" belt (as opposed to the 58" belt I was using) raised the belt from the lower hose about 1/2" further. It raised the compressor (I assume by the same amount?), but the compressor doesn't hit the hood. Hard to tell how much clearance there is from the compressor to the hood, but it seems to not be an issue.
I took about a clay bar and made two 1" ***** and put them on the high spots of the compressor, then closed the hood. When I raised the hood the clay ***** were as placed... sooooo
Onward through the fog - so they say.
