Default 1979 L82 aftermarket heads question

There is a set of brand new Edelbrock EDL-60975 heads for a great price locally. Is this a good replacement for the original? I know the stock castings are not that great. I do realize these are Vortec style and would replace the intake at the same time. My stock heads are in need of rebuild and just stumbled across these. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

According to the Jeg's website they are stock replacement heads for 302" thru 400" small blocks. So they will work on your 350".

I know they will fit, I'm just curious if they are a good replacement as far as HP/Torque. I know anything aftermarket and aluminum from the major companies will be better than stock. It's all of the specs on the Edelbrock I'm curious about. I'm not well versed in what my CR will change to etc.

compression will go to about 10:1 since they are 64cc heads vs current 76cc. They are a good improvement to get the true potential out of the L-82 cam along with a set of 1.52 competition cams roller tip rockers.

Just about anything is better than the 882 stock smog heads. The vortecs are certainly a decent upgrade but others will know more about the vortecs. Just curious about how much you are paying for them?

The stock L-82 TRW pistons with the 76 CC OEM heads had an advertised compression of 8.9:1, just short of 9:1. I have read that many who have actually measured the OEM pistons with the stock heads, calculated the actual compression was LESS than 8.9:1 and certainly with a worn motor the compression would probably be around 8.5:1, give or take. So with the votecs you are probably looking at around 9.5:1 which a good number with iron heads for pump gas...higher might be more problematic with detonation.

These are Vortec style aluminum heads. So the compression ratio won't be a problem. Aluminum can handle a full point more than iron.

Just a question what to do for an intake manifold? Or do the old style ones also bolt to these heads? Some have the dual bolt pattern so that both types of intake will work.

As stated above, these are aluminum heads. I'm paying $800 for the pair. They are $1400 or more on Summit for a pair.

These seem to only have the pattern for a Vortec style intake.

Well, I guess that is the next question if I do indeed buy the heads.. Which Vortec intakes will fit under the stock hood? I've seen some members with a drop base aircleaner that should do the trick. I'm considering getting away from the Quadrajet as well even though I have a rebuild kit from Cliff's sitting around ready to be used. I've rebuilt a few Holley carbs but the Rochester makes me apprehensive for some reason.

Keep in mind with those heads that you are not done buying parts. New intake $300, then likely longer pushrods $100, special headgaskets $100, better headbolts for alum heads $125. Maybe they are not such a great deal?

Words of wisdom here. The era of the vortex is coming to a close, and the last few people with them know it.

locally (Branson Missouri Craigslist if you're interested)a guy is selling his etek Edelbrock aluminum head for 200$, new. Single head.

Your better off skipping the aluminum vortec heads unless you already have a vortec setup.
