Default 1980 Front bumper mounting bolt size

I'm referring to the metal A shaped one, not the fiberglass one. 1/2"? If so, the holes are bigger. I thought about up-sizing, but a second thought had me thinking it might be a safety feature, as the smaller-than-hole bolt would tear away easier in the event of a front end collision.

I thought that the front impact bar. The 'A' shaped piece you are referring to...is bolted in place and has nuts that are loose and NOT welded to the frame. I have to double check but I believe that they are 1/2" and generally have a special flat washer that has teeth on them to BITE into the steel when they are tightened. No need to change them....but do as you wish. And the holes in the impact bar being larger than the bolt is so it can be adjusted.

Photos of what you are dealing with always helps.
