My opinion is this wore down very slowly over thousands of miles, most of the material will have been caught in the filter. Just pull the cam and lifters and replace them with new parts and drive the car. As long as the car has good oil pressure and makes no obvious funny noise just remove and replace.

Pick one of the better rated oils from this article and have fun.

If it's just for a year or so, why not save a buck?

What about that intake... how much is that cavernous open plenum messing with my low-to-midrange ?h

Do you think as single upgrade a Performer square bore would be a good idea ?

A smaller plenum intake (dual plane) will greatly improve street manners, along with making it easier to get moving from a stop. Noticeably.

If you're running an automatic I would look for a dual plane intake manifold. Especially with the mild cam you're talking about. If its a manual trans, it doesn't matter as much.

As expected, worn lobes... one in particular. FWIW the date stamp was 1988. Further, it is an Energizer cam 278H.

BTW, there was no sludge in the oil pan... there were however a few large metal flakes. But otherwise clean.

Install a steel tubing fuel line from pump to carb. If that rubber line leaks, you will not get the fire out in time.

You should be terrified of those intake bolts. Somebody thought they were clever by using Allens. If the head of that bolt ever strips / rounds off, you are screwed. Just nothing to get a hold of. So when you place your Summit order look for some 12pt ARP intake bolts in your choice of flavors.
