Does anyone know what kind of fasteners are used to mount the heater and evaporator box on a 70 air car? I know there are 2 studs on the outside firewall for the evaporator box to bolt to. One stud on the heaterbox that goes through the evaporator box ond gets a nut on it. Not sure if you use nuts and bolts or what on the others. There was one speed nut on one of the bottom holes on the firewall, I don’t know if that is correct. Thanks for any information you can provide!

Hi Ray,
I'm sorry I can't help much with the a/c air box because my car doesn't have a/c.

Have you taken a look at the a/c sheets in the AIM?
They show a combination of screws and nuts and threaded stud plates and nuts.

Depending on what you are trying to accomplish, it may be required that the splash shield under the car and side vent need to be removed to gain access to parts or bolts that need removal/service.
Not an easy job for sure, but doable.
Be very careful if you need to remove the side vent as it has a stud molded to the vent on the bottom and it can "Snap", and you'll not be happy at all. You can only reach it through removing the splash shied. Use PB rust dissolver on the stud and let it soak if need be/careful spraying the surrounding area use a towel to contain the spray area. I'll post here what pics I have, maybe some will help. Of course I can never seem to find the ones I thought i had. Good Luck

Thanks for the help. I took this car apart about 14 years ago and am srarting to put it back together. I can’t find the hardware to install the heater and evaporator boxes. All I can find is the nuts for the studs. So I don’t know what the proper stuff is and can not a supplier that has them for sale. I would be happy to buy new or used. Thanks again for the information and pictures!

Hi Ray,
If you decide to gain some access through the opening for the side grill 'cguy' is right:
It's a little tricky to reach the nut on the stud... I use a 1/4" drive socket with the long extension and a deep socket.
Be careful you don't twist the stud off!!!

You can reach it with the splash shield in place.
If you want to remove the splash shield the rocker trim panel needs to come off first.

Thanks Allen. Car was completley taken apart so I have access to everything, motor is not back in yet but want to put it back in this weekend. I would like to get this all buttoned up before then.

Hi Ray,
Both regular nuts and speed type nuts are used on the studs and screws.

Here is a picture from the engine bay side of the car. Just a hole in the metal but it does not look like it is treaded this is far right bottom. Above that is the stud coming thru attached to the heater box that gets a nut. The next one to the right from the inside on the car gets a screw that goes thru a speed nut and goes inside the evvapotaror box and can not be seen from the engine bay side. The next 2 on the far passenger side are studs that get nuts. The next one bottom left from engine bay side gets bolt and nut, and then there is the last one in the photo. It appears to use a screw (comes from the interior) through the plate and then a nut.
