Default 1980/License Plate light bulb/Replacement

What is the preferred way(simple)way to replace license plate light bulb. From the rear by removing the two screws or going underneath and reaching down to access the bulb?

TIA

it's been 30 years since I last changed one, but I think I did it by removing the Licences Plate and reached up 1/4 turn and the plug Pigtail came out

There is lens covering the bulb above the license plate held in place by two screws. Don't believe the plate needs to be removed to access the bulb. Going underneath and reaching down to the bulb appears to be method to replace the bulb, but seems very awkward. Just looking for the simplest way...TIA

The following was taken directly from the 1981 Corvette Shop Manual.

LICENSE PLATE LAMP SERVICE

Bulb Replacement
1. Remove two screws to drop lamp down from rear bumper trim panel.
2. Remove twist out socket from lamp housing and replace defective bulb.
3. Install in reverse order of removal.

The license lamp does not have a separate lens. It's a one piece assembly, with the lens and reflector housing bonded together into a lamp assembly.

This is what the lamp looks like, once it's been removed from the car.

Yup. That's exactly what I did on my '80. I also broke off one of the screw tabs on the housing (it was siezed in there, it took some big vise-grips to unscrew). The replacement housing looks just like the ones in your post!

The screw was rusted into the plastic, so no amount of PB Blaster would have helped (not a metal problem). So be careful.
