Default Changing oil in my 69

I have a 69 c3 with a 427 bb. Time for my first oil change. A few questions. How many quarts of oil does it hold? Is there a doc that shows the grease points? I have a floor jack. Is there a jack point to use that will allow me to raise it high enough to get clearance to access the drain and filter?

A floor jack will raise the car high enough for an oil change, but a chassis lube may not be so easy. fill the oil filter before you install it, then fill the motor until the dip stick reads correctly. Run the motor for a few minutes, then check the dipstick again.

A floor jack will raise the car high enough to get the car on jackstands. It may also be possible to raise the car onto a cheap pair of steel ramps under the tires that you otherwise wouldn't be able to drive the car onto due to the approach angle. Please don't go under the car with only a hydraulic jack supporting it.

For simple oil changes in the driveway, I use a pair of 56" two-piece Race Ramps. The approach angle is shallow enough for my '80.

For more complex stuff, I have a Qwik-Lift that gets the whole car off the ground, but still on her wheels.

Absolutely, it should go without saying that if you're using a hydraulic jack, using jack stands are a must.

Maybe I’ll just take it to a mechanic shop. Is there a schematic that shows the grease points?

Click on Corvette and then pick your year then rear it!

For an oil change? Take it to someone you know and trust. Pick the *correct oil*. Do not forget the ZDDP additive

I currently use Castrol 10w-40. What is a ZDDP additive?

Get an owners manual for your car. It has all that information in it.

ZDDP is an additive to compensate for the reduced levels of zinc and phosphorous required to prevent premature cam wear on older cars with flat tappet camshafts. The Castrol 10W40 you are using does not have those additives at a high enough level. So you either need to use an additive or a oil designed for older cars.
Concerning jacking up the car, if you raise the car by the front cross member make sure to use a large thick piece of wood that spreads the load over the front and rear edge of the cross member. If you jack the car up by the center of the cross member you will push it in.

Make sure that whoever is doing your oil change is NOT using a cheesy oil filer.

Obtaining the correct oil is not good if you use a crappy oil filter.

I use AMSOIL 10w-30 Z-Rod oil for the flat tappet engine Corvettes. Good for one year or 5000 miles. They also make a 20w-50 Z-rod oil also.

If you find an oil just make sure you verify the oil change interval. Because some of them may be the correct oil for having the correct levels of zinc and phosphorus but be good for only 3 months or 3000 miles

I use WIX 51069 oil filter (twist on design)

DO NOT use the AC Delco PF-454. It is to small even though GM will say that it is the correct one.

If you want to use Castrol synthetic, 5w-50 is for flat tappet cams.

Or you can order Valvoline VR-1 10W30 conventional oil at O'Reilly's Auto Parts.

50W is much too thick for general use. 5W-20 or even 5W/10W-30 should be fine.

after some googling for zddp levels i found
castrol also has 20-50 version.
thanks for the heads up.

i switched to castrol after my navy cousin was involved in
oil testing for the navy.
castrol scored 3rd in their multi brand testing for
what oil was best,
must say after 60k using 20-50 red top {old version)
my motor is tight and shows very little oil color change and
the motor uses very very little oil.

thanks for the post
