If the NCRS guys drink enough beer, that 496 will start looking like it has matching numbers!

Thanks man. The cleaner I have right now has a pretty big drop already, so my question to you is, where to you get your sweet looking hood?

You can see here how much lower my repro air cleaner sits....Notice the air cleaner to fuel pressure gauge proximity.

And I doubt that will still get yours under a stock BB hood.

My hood is an L88 "hi rise" from Vanacors corvettes....They are out of business now. They bounced in and out of business, I was watching for them to open and as soon as they did, I ordered it, and drove out 8hrs to them to get it.... a month later, they closed again. Its basically a 1 off hood at this point.

You can get a nice L88 hood from Ecklers that will clear your RPM intake and drop base air cleaner. It will still be close but it will clear.

Awesome build and thread. It was a nice car when you got it, it'll be really sweet when you're done.

My '68 has a 570hp/606ft/lb 489cu in with M21 and 3.08 rear. Like yours it has 450+ft/lbs tq at 2500 rpm - such fun driving out on the street - drop a ratio or two and hit the loud pedal at peak torque 3800 rpm and you'll enjoy the way it'll 'leap' away (best budget on getting some modern rubber to 'harness' that power though!)

Yep, I'm starting to research tires now. The Nitto NT01s seem well rated from people I know.

I like the "loud pedal".

Well,

Tonight I measured the rise of the clearance for the hood.
The L-88 hood gives 4 1/8" of clearance over the drain rails.

My air cleaner sits at 4 3/8". Well Poop.

The carb flange sits at 2" above the rails, so that means I need less than 2 1/8" rise above the flange.

This is the lowest one I have found at 2.18" above but that is right on the edge. It is from Jegs part number 555-50000 (I didn't include the link because its hella long).

So I either find a shorter air filter or a hood bigger than L-88.
Something like ajrothm's cool hood would be sweet but I am not sure if this one is very close.

Any suggestions my friends?

I couldn't use full OEM style 'drop down' air filter over RPM 'Air Gap' (and under the L88 style hood) - so used a 2" thick filter element and air filter top to get back some of the lost air flow.

If you go with the LT1 style air cleaner, 2” drop base, run a 3” element, you’ll have 1 5/8” clearance from the center of the lid to the throat area of the carb. (Assuming you are not using a carb with a choke tower). That is the bare minimum you can get away with, without choking he motor do death. You need at least 3/4” clearance from the carb vent tubes to the air cleaner. If you put a 2” element in the air cleaner, it will kill power and possibly create fueling issues with the vent tubes restricted.

You definitely need to try this air cleaner first, run a single carb gasket and it “should” clear the L88 hood.

It cleared on mine by 1/8”, and I had an air gap on intake which is even taller.

I would put a repro LS6 intake manifold on it and then you can use the stock Big Block hood.

http://cranescorvettesupply.com/71-c...ls6-454-425hp/

Way cheaper than a hood and paint....

Got it. Thanks
Ok so it turns out that my air cleaner only has a 1.18" drop and sits 2.75" above the carb flange. If I go with this base it will drop it another 0.82" which will still give me plenty of room over the carb and clear the L-88 hood!!!

Thanks for the help!!!!

Bruh.... you aren't listening....LOL

You need this:

https://www.corvettecentral.com/c3-6...f%3fcount%3d18

It has the same 2" drop as your Keyser air cleaner base, but it also has the indented lid to get the wing nut and stud below or flush with the lid. This gives you more clearance on top. Plus the base will clear your fuel pressure gauge and throttle bracket. GM made these air cleaners for this reason.

Dude I have been through all of this stuff, I have dyno tested all of this stuff and have lots of pics, measurements etc etc..... Lemme know if you need anything.

I think you'll get the LT1 air cleaner to clear the L88 hood with an RPM intake, but it will be VERY close....Like 1/2" close. Depending on the motor mounts you are using. My RPM air gap cleared with 1/8"....had to shut the hood real easy tho...lol

Ha. Ok thanks.
I hadn't looked at this one because it had no dimensions on it at all.
I just ordered it based on your glowing review!

Thanks for steering me to the best one.

Is that the same configuration as a stock OEM early BB Vette?

Yes, they are all the same as long as it was a Holley carb equipped car.

LT1, L78, L88, L79, I think even the 350/350 air cleaner is the same.

One note to Scott, the breather pipe on the air cleaner base will interfere with the rear accelerator pump on your double pumper, so you’ll need to cut it off flush and make a little block off plate for it... it’s no big deal.

That air cleaner base works well. I made more HP on the chassis dyno with that base on only (no filter or lid) then it did with just an open carb.

Fantastic! I’m also in Seattle and about to go down the rabbit hole with my newly acquired 75 coupe. Many similarities in our builds but I’m committed to being mostly done by July the 4th.

Is there a part number for that stage II suspension kit? Their website is hard to navigate on my phone.

Thanks much and awesome project !
